River Valley Nature Reserve

Our family has been blessed with the stewardship of one of the few remaining privately owned pockets of natural habitat on the Kwa Zulu Natal South Coast, River Valley Nature Reserve. The reserve falls within a horseshoe of a picturesque section of the iVungu River which meanders down through a valley of hills into the Indian Ocean at the well known Uvongo Beach, where one finds the iVungu falls. It is a small reminder of the once untouched natural coastline with it’s varied ecosystems consisting of grassland, riverine and coastal forest. Abundant birdlife including the Narina Trogon, African Finfoot, Crowned eagle, Knysna Turaco, Olive Woodpecker and over 145 species of birds inhabit the reserve. Antelope such as Nyala, Impala, Bushbuck, and Blue and Grey Duiker can be seen on the reserve and if you are fortunate you might be able to get a sighting of the Cape Clawless Otter that frequent the reserve. It is our pleasure to be able to share this beautiful part of YHWH’s creation for others to enjoy, by being accommodated in our upmarket cottages, a small private campsite, walking trails through the reserve and a picnic area.

As the sun peaks through the clouds after 3 days of beautiful rain we can’t help but marvel at the beauty of nature. The impala frolicking in the one spot of sun and the brown winter grass sighing a sigh of relief after the driest summer, autumn and winter the reserve has ever had. 65mm is not enough to totally replenish depleted soil moisture reserves or even begin filling dams, but it certainly has brought a glimmer of hope to our game. We are so grateful and blessed by this provision of gentle rain.

Every once in a while we get to experience a very special moment and today was one of those. Our very own Hannah got engaged to the amazing Matt. The excitement setting up was tangible, the efforts put in by all not to leak the secret were countless and the weather and setup was just perfect in every way. Today will be a day we will never ever forget. Congratulations Matt and Hannah, we are so incredibly excited for the adventures that lie ahead.
