Cresset House - Facility for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities Cresset House is a care facility in Midrand, South Africa that offers residential and work facilities to adults who are living with intellectual disabilities.

Cresset House is a community which provides a 'home away from home' for adults living with intellectual disabilities. There is always a hive of activity in our community. From our villagers daily activities, to corporates and small business investing their time to us through partnerships, social initiatives and sustainability projects. Founded in 1961 on a large property in Carlswald, Kyalami, initially as a school for children with intellectual disabilities Cresset decided t meet the increasing demand for facilities offering care to adults with intellectual disabilities by changing the focus of its facility. Today we have over 50 villagers who form part of our family, and together we live in on a property situated in Glen Austin, Midrand. Our community is home to villagers from a diversity of cultures and nationalities, making Cresset House a place of warmth, stimulation and nurture for those that call it home.

This month, our focus is on appreciating the little things, celebrating the people around us and recognising the blessings that we sometimes take for granted.

Gratitude reminds us that happiness is not always found in the big moments, but often in the simple things; a smile, a helping hand, a kind word, a friendship or simply having someone who cares.

Through our Gratitude Wednesdays, we encourage staff and residents to participate, have fun with our weekly dress-code themes and spread kindness, positivity and appreciation.

Let's make November a month where we:
💛 Appreciate one another and Celebrate the little things.
💚 Express our thankfulness.
🤍 Choose positivity everyday

WELLNESS WEDNESDAY

Sr. Fakazi from Life Carsten View Hospital- Mental Health Department facilitated a powerful Mental Health Awareness session with our caregivers, encouraging them to always remember they also need to fill their cups — because burnout is real.

We need to care for our villagers and for this we need to have our cups filled to be able to care for them.

Her message to our team:

"Don't look down on yourselves. Don't dim your light, because your light brings shine to the villagers in their darkest time. You are a light to them."

We spoke about what burnout really feels like: No passion, no energy, emotionally exhausted. Asking yourself "Am I making a difference?" when challenges feel too much. Burnout will tell you there is nothing left to give, that you are not good enough.

What we took from session:

- Acknowledge how far you've come
- Recognize how you have touched the lives of our villagers — the work you do matters
- Be proud of yourselves
- We see you, we appreciate you
- Taking care of yourself is not selfish. You need to recharge. Stay in your lane and do some self-introspection.

Wellness Wednesday Reminder: Selfcare is not Selfish, it is Essential for sustainable Performance.

A huge round of applause to our awesome villagers and Workshop team for hosting a fantastic High Tea. Everyone put in so much effort to prepare the goodies and to set up the beautiful tables.

Seeing our villagers happy and celebrating their skills is what it’s all about.
