NGQUSHWA LOCAL MUNICIPALITY LEADS BUILD-UP CAMPAIGN AHEAD OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR DISASTER RISK REDUCTION.

Ngqushwa Local Municipality, in collaboration with Amathole District Municipality Fire and Rescue Services, the Department of Home Affairs, Eastern Cape Department of Health, Department of Agriculture, Traditional Leaders, SAPS, IEC and other stakeholders, conducted a build-up awareness campaign ahead of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on 15 October 2026.

The campaign aims to educate communities on disaster preparedness, fire prevention, water conservation, safe human settlements and the importance of reporting disasters early.

Residents are encouraged to report disasters through their Ward Councillors and Ward Committees as soon as incidents occur, allowing the municipality to assess the situation and coordinate assistance with relevant departments.

The campaign also highlighted the importance of proper spatial planning, including consideration of access roads and wetlands when planning housing developments.

Fire and Rescue Services continues to conduct awareness programmes in schools and communities, while the Department of Agriculture assists farmers with preparedness for drought, water conservation and agricultural emergencies.

The Department of Health also provided information on food poisoning, the importance of HIV testing and measures to prevent foodborne illnesses. Communities were encouraged to practise good hygiene, handle and store food safely and seek medical attention when food poisoning is suspected.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) used the campaign to educate community members about special votes and the requirements and process for applying for a special vote.

SAPS further encourages communities to report criminal activities, including cable theft and hijacking, which can threaten public safety and essential services.

Ngqushwa Local Municipality calls on all residents to take responsibility for disaster preparedness and work together with government to build safer and more resilient communities.
