KWAZULU-NATAL DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION RECEIVES MEMORANDUM FROM SADTU KZN

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, represented by MEC for Education Mr Sipho Hlomuka, received a memorandum from the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (SADTU) KwaZulu-Natal following a march against austerity measures held on 16 October 2026 at the Marine Building in Durban.

The MEC was accompanied by the Head of Department, Mr Nkosinathi Ngcobo, and KwaZulu-Natal Director-General, Ms Nokuthula Khanyile, during the handover.

WATCH | It was a joyous occasion for the Zidedele community in the King Cetshwayo District as residents joined the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education in celebrating the official opening of Siyakhanyisa Primary School.

Learners entertained the audience with vibrant song and dance, while ululation and music filled the air, adding to the excitement and pride surrounding the opening of their brand-new, state-of-the-art school.

The celebration marked a significant milestone for the community, which now has access to modern school infrastructure designed to create a conducive environment for quality teaching and learning.

WATCH | KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Education, Mr Sipho Hlomuka, delivered a powerful keynote address at the official opening of Siyakhanyisa Primary School in the King Cetshwayo District, celebrating a major investment in quality education and modern school infrastructure.

“It is always a great pleasure to visit schools, especially on celebratory occasions such as this, where we are presenting you with a newly built, state-of-the-art primary school,” said MEC Hlomuka.

The MEC reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to extending infrastructure improvements to more schools across the province, assuring communities that have yet to benefit that efforts are continuing to improve teaching and learning environments.

He further called on communities to safeguard the new school and all public infrastructure against vandalism, urging residents to report perpetrators to law enforcement authorities.

KZN DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ENGAGES UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA ON TEACHER TRAINING COLLABORATION

​The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education met today with representatives from the University of Pretoria (UP) to discuss strategic collaboration on teacher professional development through distance education.

​The proposed collaboration aims to enhance educator qualifications across several key areas:
* Advanced Diploma in School

* Leadership and Management

* BEd Honours in Learning Support

* BEd Honours in Computer Integrated Education

* BEd Honours in Education Management, Law and Policy

​The Department delegation was led by Deputy Director-General for Curriculum Management and Delivery, Mr. Mbongiseni Mazibuko, alongside officials from Curriculum Management, Corporate Management, EHRD, FET, and Teacher Development. The University of Pretoria delegation was led by Dr. Mary Ooko, Manager in the Unit for Distance Education.

​Through continuous teacher development and higher qualification access, the Department remains committed to enhancing the quality of teaching and learning across KwaZulu-Natal.
