Cacadu Development Agency and Koukamma Local Municipality Launched a Household backyard Food Security Programme.
The Cacadu Development Agency (CDA) and Koukamma Local Municipality launched a groundbreaking initiative on 20 November 2024 to address food security in the Tsitsikamma region. The launch was graced by the presence of the Mayor of Koukamma Local Municipality, Cllr Mpumelelo Vuso, Speaker of Council, Cllr Dadely Maasdorp, Councillors from Ward 5 and 6 Mr Shannon May and Ms Nomathamsanqa Sikiwe, as well as the CEO of CDA, Dr. Eldrid Uithaler.
The residents of Wittekleibos, Guava Juice, Thornham, and Woodlands were empowered to grow their own food while acquiring essential agricultural skills through a competition-based programme. Mayor Vuso and Dr Uithaler handed over garden equipment, seeds and seedling to 20 households from the four areas - five from each area. This initiative not only promotes self-reliance but also equips locals with practical skills for sustainable farming.
Participants will receive ongoing support, including garden monitoring, to encourage innovation and recognize achievements. Awards and incentives will be distributed at the end of the harvest to celebrate exceptional efforts. This collaboration highlights the power of partnerships in advancing community development and addressing food security challenges.
