"On the first week of September (1st - 6th) 1991, 600 black and white tertiary students from 129 Universities, Technikons and Colleges gathered at Rhodes University grounds to launch the South Africans Students Congress (SASCO).

In uncertainty about whether the dream of a single non-racial progressive tertiary student organization will ever come true, than the excitement that they were marking a new era in South Africa's educational and political history.

Gathered under the banner: Towards a single non-racial student organization, delegates from SANSCO and NUSAS spent long and arduous hours of heated theoretical exchanges culminating in the launch, on 6th September 1991, of a gallant student organization which has since then been at the cutting edge of the struggle for the fundamental change of tertiary education.

Since the launch of NUSAS in 1924, a new chapter of true non-racial student politics was opened."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RE. STATE OF READINESS RTL CAMPAIGN

Revolutionary Greetings Comrades

The South African Student Congress Claude Qavane Branch (South Campus) would love firstly to congratulate and salute the class of 2017 for their performance. We would love them to continue striving for excellence as education plays a pivotal role in the development of the country. We continue to urge everyone to join our campaign which enables schools to function, giving the working class children a fighting chance. To those who did not make it, we say do not despair, repetition is the mother of learning and there are many other alternatives to success. In the words of Julius Caesar, ''Success is not final; failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts.''

The Right To Learn Campaign is annual campaign whose objectives is to address issues of access and success in institutions of higher learning. It also seeks to ensure that no student may be denied access. We as SASCO Claude Qavane want to urge and assure the public and the general student population that SASCO is ready to address all student-related issues and live up to its expectation to deliver its popular mandate of building a student friendly campus.

At the heart of the Right to Learn campaign as the organisation we seek to address all student issues whether financial or academic as to ensure no student would be denied access, understanding our historic backgrounds have always been a disadvantage to a number of students. We want to assure everyone that we as SASCO will devote ourselves to tackling all student issues and defeat all counter revolutionary acts composed by the system of oppression that seek to undermine the development of the children of working class background.

We as the Branch give our full and unequivocal support to the SASCO-led SRC. We will continue to encourage comrades deployed to give their utmost service to students and those who wish to come to the institution, we believe that commitment brings excellent service. As SASCO we believe no student shall be denied their chance to prove themselves and change society.

We also want to take this opportunity to express our commitment to the imperative of a progressive rollout of free education to learners and students from poor and working class background households. This is why it was important for the President on 16 December 2017
to declare the piloting of fee-free tertiary education for the poor and working class students.

As a result of the above, students who have met the minimum admission requirements to pursue qualifications at the University will be permitted to register without having to pay the registration fee upfront.

As the Branch we wish all campuses across the country and the movement as a whole a successful Right To Learn Campaign. As a movement we understand that majority of those who come to institutions of higher learning their education is set to be their home's liberation that's why we will continue to foster Transformation to better the lives of many. May we live to transform and make our society better. In the words of the late former President Nelson Mandela, "Education is the most powerful weapon one could use to change society".

We will continue to serve and thank all students for vesting their trust in us. Indeed we will deliver. May we all have a peaceful and a progressive 2018

For immediate release
We are very sadden by the recent incident that occured at Second Avenue Campus. It is clear that the the university does not take the safety of students seriously. We have been stressing that Second Avenue Campus is isolated when it comes to protection services and we have been complaining about this nothing has been done. This is evident that the university and management does not take us seriously, they do not care about the safety of students. The issue of gender based violence is a national issue,i t's a disturbing and a pressing problem that needs immediate intervention. As the the organisation we say enough is enough. The university must take responsibility, we won't let this slide.
How do we go on campus and act as if nothing happened? how do we continue with our academics like nothing happen? We there for demand that the university must find this person and arrest him. The university must act very quickly on this matter as the safety of students is under siege.
We also request that the unversity must increase the security detail on campus especially now we are heading to the examination period. As SASCO we can not accept that our sisters are no longer safe on campus. Our residences are our home away from home, we can not allow that the neglegency of the instituition to be a barrier of our succes.
SASCO will ensure the following.
1. Extra security detail is introduced
2. The criminal, ra**st is arrested
3. Conducive study environment on campus is established
4. The issue of insourcing of workers must finalised
Nelson Mandela University SASCO will shutdown the university until the university agrees to intensify the security.

SASCO a strong leadership, for a secure future
