THE ANCWL IS OUTRAGED BY THE LACK OF COMMITMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF FREE HIGHER EDUCATION FOR THE POOR AND THE LOSS OF LIFE DURING STUDENTS PROTESTS AT WITS UNIVERSITY DUE TO POLICE BRUTALITY

The ANCWL is extremely dismayed at the lack of commitment by ANC deployees in Government to implement Congress resolutions of the ANC. The ANC in 2017 resolved on free quality education for the poor. Instead of effectively and efficiently implementing this resolution, our deployees have decided to gamble with the future of this Country who are the poor youth who only want education.

We are further dismayed by the insensitivity displayed by Ministers that utilize social media in an uncouth manner to make distorted comments about the lived realities of students of which they know nothing about and furthermore defending police brutality. The life of a citizen was lost, he was killed in cold blood, his only sin was being in the same vicinity as a student protest. Situations such as these are a clear demonstration of the life-threatening conditions which are faced by the children of the working class in their pursuit for education. Such draconian, heavy handed violence from members of the security cluster(SAPS) towards our children cannot be allowed in a constitutionally democratic epoch.

As opposed to investing in education that will produce sustainable skills and knowledge systems with the capacity of job creation, innovation and transformation, there has Instead been an over concentration of bailing out ailing SOEs that are mismanaged by their political cronies and beneficiaries of white monopoly capital. There is no justifiable explanation as to why the fiscal adjustments were focused on education to the extent of defunding institutions responsible for the education of the children of the working class. The reproduction of social-economic inequalities as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic creates a compelling situation where addition resources should be poured into the education sector to ensure that poor students survive and succeed. The ANCWL calls for the urgent re-allocation of funds to cover all poor students and we further call on a moratorium by all Universities and TVETs with regards to historical debts and Acceptance of debt agreements. No student must be left behind including the missing middle.

We would like to convey our sincere condolences to the families of the citizen who did nothing wrong but to only be in the same area with protesting students. Our government owes students more than just PR statements that present a good picture about student funding when the real picture on the ground is deplorable and young people are being refused access simply because they are poor and cannot afford to pay. In his honour Universities must not just consider profits but become dependable stakeholders who respond to the demands of students during this difficult academic year of Covid19.

We call upon the women of South Africa and members of the ANCWL to visit Wits University and all other institutions in their immediate vicinity and support the protesting students, we furthermore request that they act as buffers between the blood thirsty police and our children. It is concerning that SAPS fails to show this commitment and violence in dealing with the scourge of violence against women and children, which has led to numerous abusers walking freely on south African streets. The ANCWL calls for an urgent investigation into the death caused by the SAPS and furthermore on the level of violence that is meted out against peaceful unarmed protesters in higher education. The ANCWL calls for justice to be served against the murderers masquerading as public representatives.
