A safari is never only about what you see, but what you come to understand.

Along the way, you begin to learn the isiXhosa names carried through generations here in the Eastern Cape, each one holding meaning, history, and a deeper connection to the animals that move through this landscape.

Every name tells a story rooted in culture, observation, and respect for the natural world. As you begin to understand the language of the land, each sighting becomes more thoughtful, immersive and memorable.

Here, safari is as much about learning and listening as it is respecting the ways of the wild🐘🌿✨

At Nyosi Wildlife Reserve, the land is never just landscape - it is living architecture. On World Environment Day, we are reminded that every valley, thicket and open plain is shaped into home for the creatures that move through it 🌿

For us, it is to honour what the Earth gives, and to move gently within it, through shifting weather, the turning of life cycles 🌱 and the flow of Mother Nature. As part of the world, we are entrusted to protect🌍

When people ask what there is to do at Nyosi other than game drives - there’s plenty to enjoy in between. Think gin tasting in the afternoon 🍸, wine tasting that leads into dinner 🍷, generous cheeseboards 🧀 and time in the hot tub 🛁

A collection of extraordinary sightings, quietly captured through the lens of our guest, James Albott, during his time with us 📸✨

For those travelling from Port Elizabeth, just a 30 minute drive away to Nyosi, it’s a reminder of how close the wild is - an open invitation to step out of the city and into the stillness of the bush 🌿. There’s no need to travel far to find yourself in a completely different world, where nature quietly takes over 🐘🦒

Our sunrise 🌅 and sunset 🌄 safari packages offer the chance to experience the wilderness at its most alive - when the light softens, the air shifts, and the landscape reveals its quiet magic. Explore our safari day packages via the link below.

Today, on Africa Day, we celebrate the people whose knowledge, wisdom and connection to the land continue to shape and protect our future!

One of those people is Blackie Witbooi, a valued member of the Nyosi Reserve and Ground staff team. As one of our senior team members, Blackie carries with him an extraordinary understanding of indigenous plants, their medicinal and cultural uses, and the vital role they play within our landscapes and gardens🌱

Blackie embodies what it means to be African; deeply connected to the land, to community and to the passing on of knowledge. Beyond his work on the reserve, he played an important role in helping establish a non-profit initiative focused on greening and uplifting surrounding communities!

His natural storytelling ability and deep botanical knowledge are not only inspiring, but essential to preserving traditions and wisdom that risk being lost over time. Through his stories, teachings, and daily work, we hope this knowledge will continue to live on through future generations.

Today, we honour Blackie, and all those across Africa who continue to protect, preserve, and share the rich heritage of this continent. 🌍

A big thank you to the Wildlife Management Students for capturing this footage 📹

Golden hour in the bush hits differently 🌅

Sink into the hot tub as the bush opens up in every direction. The day fades, the sky softens, and for a moment, everything feels still🌿

Save this for your next Eastern Cape safari escape💛

Did you know?

Spekboom can switch how it “breathes” to survive drought☀️ In dry conditions, it opens its pores at night instead of during the day when temperatures are cooler and water loss is minimal, storing carbon while conserving every drop of moisture. By day it closes up to protect itself from the heat, allowing it to thrive where most plants would struggle to survive🌿
