Last week, despite the challenging weather in Gqeberha, we were proud to host a successful Masterclass and Public Lecture as part of the 2026 Archbishop Thabo Makgoba Annual Lecture Series on Values-Based Leadership.

We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who attended and contributed to these important conversations on ethical leadership, institutional accountability, and women’s economic empowerment. Your presence and engagement reaffirm the importance of creating spaces for courageous, values-driven dialogue.

Led by Dr Futhi Mtoba, the sessions challenged us to reimagine inclusive economies and institutions, reminding us that ethical leadership is not abstract, but a lived responsibility embedded in the decisions we make and the systems we shape.

Fund Resilience, Not Disasters!

As Raymond Mhlaba Centre for Governance and Leadership at Nelson Mandela University, we would like to thank the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Eastern Cape Provincial Disaster Management Centre, and Old Mutual Foundation for partnering with us for the 2025 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) Provincial Seminar, held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on 16 October 2025.

This important engagement brought together government, academia, and business, including Stenden South Africa, Volkswagen SA, and the ARISE Network, under the theme “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters.” The dialogue focused on how policy, collaboration, and innovation can strengthen disaster resilience in communities and businesses.

This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to advancing research, capacity building, and innovation in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) across the Eastern Cape Province. We are also proud to announce the upcoming launch of our Short Learning Programme on Disaster Management.

A special appreciation goes to Mr. Mosekama Osia Mokhele, our Research Associate from the Department of Public Management and Leadership at the university, who presented at the seminar, our Director, Dr. Ongama Mtimka, PhD, who co-facilitated the session; and all colleagues from the university who supported us throughout this engagement.

Together, we are driving knowledge, collaboration, and resilience for safer communities.
