Research by Philadelphia Lillian Sedio examines the Section 100 intervention in the North West Department of Health and asks what makes public-sector recovery sustainable.

The study found that lasting improvement depends on more than restoring control. It requires capable leadership, stronger governance, reliable systems, clear accountability, and an institution that can continue functioning once external authority is withdrawn.

The key lesson: a successful intervention should leave behind more than short-term stability. It should leave behind institutional capability.

For South African SMEs, securing a retail listing is only part of the challenge.

Research by Dr Devapriya Kailash Nath Sharma, conducted at the NWU Business School, explores how new product development strategies influence SMEsโ€™ ability to enter and remain competitive in the formal grocery retail sector.

The study found that research, product testing and evidence-based validation play a critical role in gaining retailer access. But once listed, suppliers must continue adapting, managing costs and meeting retailer requirements to sustain their position.

The key lesson: A promising product may open doors, but credible evidence gets it onto the shelf, and continuous learning helps keep it there.
