CONNECTING OCCUPATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS WITH THE WORKPLACE

Today, the QCTO is at South African Airways Technical (SAAT) for another industry exposure engagement, gaining first-hand insight into the skills, competencies and practical workplace requirements of the aviation sector.

Through direct engagement with industry, QCTO officials gain a deeper understanding of workplace realities, helping strengthen the alignment between occupational qualifications and the skills required in the workplace.

The QCTO joined DHET and TVET colleges from Mpumalanga and North West at the Student Support Services capacity-building workshop in Mpumalanga on 13–14 October 2026 to strengthen career guidance and help learners make informed choices.

Together, we are ready to help learners understand occupational qualifications, explore career pathways and connect their studies to workplace opportunities. This shared commitment supports TVET colleges as institutions of choice and homes of occupational learning.

The Mpumalanga leg of the Private Skills Development Providers (SDPs) Capacity-Building Workshop concluded successfully, featuring an insightful presentation by Assistant Director: Assessment, Mr Johannes Ngomane.
Mr Ngomane empowered stakeholders with valuable insights into the administration of Final Integrated Summative Assessments (FISAs), highlighting that FISAs are decentralised and that Skills Development Providers (SDPs) are responsible for submitting FISA instruments to the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) for validation.
The session reinforced stakeholders’ understanding of assessment processes and the critical role SDPs play in ensuring compliance with QCTO requirements.

Continuing with the Mpumalanga Private SDPs Capacity Building Workshop, Ms Dikeledi Nchabeleng, QCTO Assistant Director: Quality Assurance, guided stakeholders through the learner enrolment process and quality assurance key monitoring of curriculum implementation.

Her presentation provided practical guidance on the accurate completion of enrolment forms, emphasising the importance of ensuring that all information aligns with the prescribed requirements. She also highlighted common errors that could lead to processing delays and shared insights on how to avoid them.

The workshop continues to strengthen the capacity of private Skills Development Providers (SDPs) by equipping them with the knowledge, practical skills and tools needed to navigate QCTO processes effectively and support the quality implementation of occupational qualifications.

The first day of the Mpumalanga Skills Development Providers (SDPs) Workshop focused on three key domains: Certification, Accreditation, and Qualifications Development.
The sessions provided valuable insights and practical guidance to support SDPs in the effective implementation and delivery of occupational qualifications.

Mr Paul Rowen, Director: Certification, provided valuable insights into the QCTO certification process, including the procedures and requirements for issuing certificates. While Mr Morris Chauke, Deputy Director: Qualifications Development, emphasised the importance of engaging with curriculum documents, particularly the sequencing of modules, to ensure the effective implementation and delivery of occupational qualifications.

Mr Trevor Nkhumishe, Assistant Director: Accreditation, highlighted the importance of ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements, advising SDPs to apply for permission when intending to conduct training at a site other than the one for which they are accredited.

QCTO Private SDP Workshop underway at Ehlanzeni TVET College, Mbombela Campus.
Stakeholders were warmly welcomed by Mr Malebo Lukhele, the College’s Curriculum Manager, who emphasised the importance of this engagement, particularly during the transition from legacy qualifications to occupational qualifications.

Supported by our Private SDPs Forum Chairperson, Mr George Xaba who highlighted that these workshop provides an important platform for key role-players in the skills development landscape to engage, share insights, address implementation challenges, and collaboratively identify solutions to support the successful implementation of occupational qualifications.
