Is criticism of B-BBEE always based on evidence? A compelling Sowetan opinion piece argues that much of the attack on transformation policy is driven by misinformation and flawed assumptions, while ignoring the deeper structural roots of inequality. It calls for a more informed debate that critiques implementation where necessary, but does not distort the purpose of economic redress. The University of Johannesburg, in partnership with the Presidency and the B-BBEE Commission, are hosting a high-level symposium on “Black Economic Empowerment and Its Discontents: The Past, the Present and the Future.”
The event brings together a wide range of stakeholders to engage in rigorous, evidence-based discussions on the trajectory and impact of B-BBEE within South Africa’s evolving political economy. Conversations are meant to emphasise the importance of grounding empowerment in its constitutional mandate while improving conceptual clarity across related policy areas.
The symposium seeks to assess B-BBEE outcomes and it marks the beginning of a broader research and policy engagement process. A follow-up conference later in 2026 will explore sectoral outcomes, institutional reforms, and global comparative insights.
As South Africa continues to confront inequality and low growth, the central question remains: how can B-BBEE be strengthened to achieve broader, more inclusive economic participation while supporting sustainable development?
