Two Gauteng Highway Patrol officers, Constable Korapetse and Constable Phophi were granted bail of R2000 each by Randburg Magistrate's Court.

The two officer were arrested on 30 September 2026 for a shooting incident that happened on Olifantsfontein Road on 27 February 2026, at around 18h00.

The police officers allegedly followed a car of the complainants, and shot at it, injuring the driver and one passenger. The driver succumbbed to his injuries at Tembisa hospital. The case was postponed to 01 December 2026.

Two police officers stationed at Limpopo Provincial Task Team were sentenced to 12 months imprisonment or a fine of R12 000 for assaulting two police officers in January 2024. Sergeant Sekona Alpheus Kobe (47), and Sergeant Mhlupheki William Vilakazi (54), were sentenced by Nebo Magistrate’s.

The sentencing follows an incident that happened on 22 January 2024, at around 20h10, when a group of police officers stopped in front of the car that was driven by Sergeant Gadifele Mabotja and Sergeant Makgato Mafona, on Monterlus Road. Sergeant Mabotja and Sergeant Mafona who were off duty.

The police officers surrounded the car driven by Mabotja and Makgato, pointing their fi****ms at them, instructed them to get out of the car, and they complied with the instructions.

The police officers then assaulted Mabotja and Mafona for no reason, not knowing they are also police officers.

Sergeant Mabotja and Sergeant Mafona who were a driver and a passenger, respectively, opened a case of assault, and they identified two police officers, Sergeant Kobe and Sergeant Vilakazi, as part of the police officers that assaulted them.

Sergeant Kobe and Sergeant Vilakazi were then charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and they were found guilty and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment or a fine of R12 000. Half of the sentence was wholly suspended for three years on conditions that they are not found guilty of a similar offence during the period of suspension.

Two police officers stationed at Zamdela Police Station were sentenced to three months imprisonment, or a fine of R1000 for assault, and a further three months imprisonment, or a fine of R1000 for malicious damage to property. The sentences imposed on Sergeant Mpho Innocentia Hlalele (41), and Sergeant Mxoli Steve Mzondi (44), were wholly suspended for five years, on condition that they are not found guilty of similar offences during the period of suspension.

The sentences imposed by the Sasolburg Magistrates Court follow an incident that happened on 04 May 2025, when Sergeant Hlalele and Sergeant Mzondi es**rted Mr Mokoena to the house of the complainant, Teboho Joseph Tshabalala, to collect church items after there was a complaint lodged by church members against Tshabalala.

Tshabalala initially refused to hand the church items to Mr Mokoena, but he later agreed. He, however, insisted on taking a video as he hand the church items to Mr Mokoena, but the two police officers were against Tshabalala taking a video. The police officers then assaulted Tshabalala and damaged his cellular phone in the process.

Tshabalala opened a case against Sergeant Hlalele and Sergeant Mzondi who were charged, and later convicted of assault and malicious damage to property.

A Kroonstad Police Officer was found guilty and sentenced to a fine of R1000 or four months imprisonment by the Kroonstad Magistrates Court. Sergeant William Belane (50) was sentenced for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

On 08 November 2023 at around 23h00, the complainant, Johannes Lekaba, was among arrested suspects waiting for police officers to es**rt them into the cells, when Sergeant Belane attacked him with an umbrella on his head. When the umbrella broke, Sergeant Belane took a stick and hit Lakaba on the arm and the stick also broke.

He came with a brick, but he was stopped by other police officers. Lekaba opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm against Sergeant Belane. Sergeant Belane was charged, found guilty and handed a wholly suspended sentence.

A former KZN Police Constable, Njabulo Ntombela (46), was sentenced to three years imprisonment, wholly suspended for corruption. He was further placed under correctional supervision for three years, in which he will have to do 16 hours of community service per month for three years.

On 29 March 2023, Constable Ntombela went to a shop that was selling dagga products, and seized a large quantity of the products. He wanted the owner of the shop to pay a bribe for the return of the products, but the owners refused to pay.

Constable Ntombela then went to the Durban Central Police Station, but he did not hand in all the products he took from the shop.

A case of corruption was opened against Constable Ntombela, and he was found guilty by the Durban Magistrates Court.

The case against a 50-year-old TMPD officer, Sergeant A N Makwela from Hammanskraal was postponed to 09 October 2026 for a formal bail application. Sergeant Makwela was arrested last week on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He made his first appearance in Temba Magistrates Court today.
