What are the most reliable fire detection systems in South Africa?

We get asked this a lot, and the honest answer is that no single brand is “the most reliable”. A system is only as good as how well it suits the enviroment, and how well it’s designed, installed and looked after. In South Africa that means working to SANS 10139, with SAQCC Fire registered technicians and FDIA registered companies doing the work.

We’ve been designing, installing and maintaining fire detection systems for 33 years, from our offices in Pretoria, Stellenbosch and Mbombela. On every site we work on, protecting lives comes first. Most of our work is also on sites where downtime is expensive: data centres, warehouses, cold rooms, mines, agricultural facilities and large commercial buildings. Our systems are built to protect your people and keep your operation running.

As a general guide, here’s how we match detection to the site:
• Addressable systems for bigger or more complex buildings, so you know exactly which device has gone into alarm.
• High Sensitivity Smoke Detection (HSSD) for data centres, battery and generator rooms, cold rooms and mills, where you need warning before there’s visible smoke.
• Wireless systems for occupied buildings and heritage sites, where running cable would cause too much disruption.
• Fibre optic linear heat detection for conveyors, tunnels and other long runs in harsh conditions.
• Flame detection for high-risk industrial areas where a fire can develop in seconds.
• Integration with your BMS, so fire alarms show up alongside the rest of your building controls.

The brands we’re accredited to install:
Fire detection: AJAX, Aritech, Bosch, Edwards, Honeywell, Hyfire, Kidde (Ziton), Securiton, Technoswitch.
HSSD: Edwards, Protec, Securiton, VESDA and Wagner
Linear heat detection: FibroLaser, Protectowire and SecuriHeat
Flame detection: Autoflame and FlameSpec
BMS fire systems: Alliance, GSNet, GSWin and Maestro

We’re SAQCC Fire, FDIA and CIDB registered. We service systems as per SANS 10139 requirements, which also keeps you on the right side of your insurer, and we run a 24-hour emergency call out line.

If you’re not sure your current system would hold up, or you’re planning a new site, get in touch and we’ll come and take a look.

Our HVAC specialist Stephen shares 5 commercial HVAC maintenance tips that reduce energy costs and prevent breakdowns:

1. Clean or replace air filters monthly
Filters trap dust, pollen and airborne particles. When they clog, the system works harder and energy costs rise. Most commercial buildings should clean or replace filters every month.

2. Inspect fan blades, belts and motors regularly
The fan keeps air moving through the building. Worn components cause weak airflow, unusual noises and unexpected breakdowns. Regular inspections keep the system running reliably.

3. Have coils professionally cleaned.
Dirt on evaporator and condenser coils blocks heat transfer and forces the unit to work harder to reach the set temperature. A professional clean keeps the system efficient and reduces running costs.

4. Replace temperature controller and thermostat batteries often
Flat batteries can cause random shutoffs and inaccurate temperature readings. A smart controller helps maintain stable temperatures with less manual adjustment.

5. Clear condensation drain pipes
Your HVAC system removes moisture from the air through the drain pipe. Blockages can lead to leaks and water damage. Regular clean-outs keep water flowing and protect your property.
Consistent maintenance lowers electricity bills, extends equipment lifespan and keeps your building comfortable.

If your system is showing signs of trouble or is overdue for a service, contact our qualified HVAC technicians.

What is the most effective gas suppression system for a server room?

The honest answer: it depends on your priorities and your risk.

After 33 years of designing, supplying, installing and maintaining gas suppression systems across South Africa, this is how the Multi-Net Systems team guides clients.

1. If environmental impact matters, choose an inert gas system.
Inert gases such as IG-541 (Inergen), IG-55 (Argonite) and IG-01 (Argon) occur naturally. They have zero ozone depletion potential and zero global warming potential. They put out a fire by lowering the oxygen level in the room, while remaining safe for people at design concentration.

2. If space and speed matter more, choose a clean agent system.
Chemical clean agents such as FK-5-1-12 and FM-200 (HFC-227ea) discharge in seconds. They need fewer cylinders and less storage space, and they leave no residue on sensitive IT equipment.

3. Match the system to the risk.
Consider how critical the server room is, what downtime would cost you, who uses the room, and how well it is sealed. These factors determine the agent, the design concentration and the cylinder layout.

4. Know when another system makes more sense. If replacing the servers would cost less than refilling or replacing the gas cylinders, an alternative fire protection system may be the more cost-effective choice. This often applies to low-value or non-critical equipment.

The bottom line
There is no one-size-fits-all fire suppression system for server rooms. The right one balances your environmental goals, your risk and your budget.

Multi-Net Systems designs, installs and maintains inert gas & clean agent for data centres, server rooms, BESS and other critical facilities, from our offices in Pretoria, Mbombela and Stellenbosch.

Kindness is a choice we can make every day.

In today's world, it matters more than ever to show up with compassion and support the people making a real difference in our communities. At Multi-Net Systems (Pty) Ltd, we believe in protecting what matters, whether that's a business, a building, or the animals who depend on caring hands.

That's why, on 11 September, our team visited the incredible people at Wollies Animal Project and made a donation to support their work. Their commitment to rescuing, caring for, and rehoming animals is truly inspiring, and we're proud to stand behind them.

🤝 We challenge every company in Pretoria and beyond to visit Wollies, meet the team, and see their work first-hand. A small act of support can change a life, or many!

Together, we can build safer, kinder communities.

Room integrity testing (door fan testing)
New in-house service at Multi-Net Systems.

Your suppression system is commissioned and signed off. But if the room leaks, the agent drains away through door seals, cable penetrations and floor voids before it's finished the job.

A room integrity test measures exactly that: whether your enclosure holds the agent for the retention time ISO 14520 and NFPA 2001 require.

Retrotec certified technicians, Retrotec equipment. For data centres, server rooms, control rooms, switch rooms and archives running HFC-227ea (FM-200), FK-5-1-12 (Novec 1230), inert gas (Inergen/IG-541).

Send us the room and the agent type. We'll handle the rest.

Room integrity testing (door fan testing)
Now in-house at Multi-Net Systems.

Meet Benard and Damien, our Retrotec certified room integrity testing specialists.

The suppression system is installed. But will the room actually hold the gas? Gaps around door seals, cable penetrations, raised floors and ceiling voids let the agent drain out long before it's done its job.

A room integrity test (door fan test) tells you whether your enclosure keeps the agent in for the full retention time required by ISO 14520 and NFPA 2001.

For data centres, server rooms, control rooms, switch rooms and archives protected by HFC-227ea (FM-200), FK-5-1-12 (Novec 1230) or inert gas (Inergen/IG-541).

Send us the room details and the agent type. We'll handle the rest.
