SEDFA today hosted a Spaza Shop Support Fund outreach engagement at the Diepkloof Welfare Centre in Soweto, bringing together small business owners seeking assistance with their applications and compliance requirements.

The outreach forms part of SEDFA's nationwide programme aimed at accelerating approvals and disbursements by providing on-site support to qualifying applicants. Working alongside officials from the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) and the City of Johannesburg, SEDFA assisted entrepreneurs with licensing challenges, application status enquiries and new applications.

Speaking on the sidelines of the engagement, SEDFA Group Executive: Ecosystem and Stakeholder Management, Nthabeleng Mokitimi-Dlamini, said: “The Spaza Shop Support Fund was introduced in response to the challenges highlighted by the 2024 foodborne illness and illicit trade crisis. While the Fund provides support such as stock and point-of-sale devices, compliance remains a critical requirement. We are calling on spaza shop owners to ensure that their businesses are properly licenced, have valid trading permits and meet all regulatory requirements.”

The next Spaza Shop Support Fund outreach will take place on 17 June at the Mabopane Sports Centre from 10:00.
