Foot and Mouth Disease Detected in Kudu at Addo Elephant National Park

South African National Parks (SANParks), working in coordination with the Department of Agriculture: Eastern Cape, confirms that a second set of diagnostic tests on samples collected from affected kudu in Addo Elephant National Park (AENP) has returned positive for Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).

The Department of Agriculture (DoA) was notified after SANParks’ wildlife health surveillance detected an increase in lameness among kudu. Although the initial tests were negative, follow-up investigation and testing confirmed FMD in kudu within the park. At present, no other wildlife species in the park are showing clinical signs consistent with FMD: https://buff.ly/pgZpV2U

SANParks Welcomes Guilty Verdict In A Decade-Long Rhino Poaching Case

South African National Parks (SANParks) welcomes the guilty verdict against former Kruger National Park Regional Ranger, Rodney Landela, and former State Veterinary Service Animal Health Technician, Kenneth Mochocho, who were found guilty of the illegal hunting and killing of a white rhino in a protected area, as well as possession of a fi***rm with the intent to commit a crime.

Minister Maynier Declares New National Park In Eastern Cape

The Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, David Maynier, has declared 18 properties in the Eastern Cape, covering a total of 10 225.9242 hectares, as the Grasslands National Park. The declaration was published in Government Gazette No. 55531 under Government Notice No. 8002.

Situated in the Eastern Cape highlands between Nqanqarhu and Rhodes, the park will help protect underrepresented grassland ecosystems and part of the Eastern Cape Drakensberg Strategic Water Source Area. Something Big Has Arrived!

We are delighted to announce that SANParks has signed a landmark renewable energy sponsorship agreement with Ampli Energy, a month-to-month renewable energy product from Discovery Green in partnership with Sasol, for the Iconic Kruger National Park.

The supply is equivalent to more than 25% of the park’s annual electricity consumption and will help advance KNP’s sustainability and decarbonization goals. The partnership will help SANParks progressively reduce the emissions associated with its electricity use, while it remains focused on its core conservation mandate.
