|| Over 30 years, South Africa conducted four censuses. Since 1996, census data has shaped national development. It has informed planning for schools, hospitals, housing, and infrastructure while guiding equitable resource allocation. It has also supported monitoring of inequality and strengthened governance systems, ensuring evidence-based decision-making.
As celebrates 30 years of census – taking in a democratic South Africa, census data from 1996 to 2022 shows a picture of progress, alongside the challenges faced by the youth.
