Today, as South Africa commemorates the 50th anniversary of the historic events of 16 June 1976, we honour the courage, sacrifice, and determination of the youth who stood up for their rights, dignity, and future.
Their bravery became a defining moment in our nation’s journey to freedom and democracy. Fifty years later, their legacy continues to inspire us to serve with honour, discipline, and integrity.
Youth Day is not only a time to remember the heroes of 1976, but also to recognise the youth of today, the leaders, innovators, and defenders of tomorrow. As members of the Pride of Lions, we have a responsibility to mentor, guide, and empower them to build a united, prosperous, and peaceful South Africa.
We remember. We honour. We serve.
Happy Youth Day 2026

🇿🇦Aviation safety is inseparable from human performance. Building on my background in Industrial and Organisational Psychology, my PhD research explored neurophysiological mechanisms underlying response‑time variability and their implications for resilience in aviation. Using brain–computer interfaces (BCI) and mobile EEG, I demonstrated how quantitative brainwave data can assess fatigue, workload, and startle responses, while enhancing ATC‑pilot communication.
My findings propose a neuroergonomic framework that operationalises human performance through predictive safety protocols and neurofeedback for self‑regulation. By empirically linking the Yerkes–Dodson performance curve with brainwave data, the study shows how Artificial Intelligence can detect cognitive performance to elevate aviation safety. This work addresses critical gaps in aeromedical disclosure and mental health, advancing proactive strategies for optimal pilot performance.

🇿🇦Chief of the SA National Defence Force, General Rudzani Maphwanya Honouring the Giants of 1976.
Fifty years ago, the Class of 1976 stood tall against apartheid, proving that youth can change history. Today, their sacrifices give us the democracy we enjoy.
To the youth of today: You are NOT a "lost generation." The same fire burns within you. When given the right platforms, you will surprise the world.
The SA National Defence Force continues to invest in your potential and fighting youth unemployment through our specialized programmes:
• Military Skills Development System (MSDS): Building top-tier military skills, discipline, and patriotism.
• South African National Service Institute (SANSI): Providing critical vocational skills and civic values for both civilian and state sectors.
"True leadership requires a foundation of discipline, and true freedom requires the skills to protect it."
Today’s 21st-century security threats; from cyber, social ills, crime, warfare to climate crises; may be different, but they require the same vigilance. I challenge you to be sharp, proactive, and independent thinkers. Analyze global trends and bring innovative solutions to the table.
Let us change the future, together, today.

🇿🇦Regional Works Unit Limpopo Change of Command Parade.
Polokwane, on Friday, 12 June 2026, the SA Army Support Base Limpopo Sportfield turned into a memorable site as Regional Works Unit Limpopo held the Change of Command Parade for the outgoing Officer Commanding Captain (SA Navy) Solly Mashigo and the incoming Officer Commanding Colonel Lundi Ncubukezi.
The prestigious parade was honoured by people from all walks of life, traditional leaders ("owners of the land") from the Mothapo, Dikgale, Moloto, Matlala, Mothiba, Rammpudu clans, the leaders of faith led by Bishop Lekganyane, Office of the Premier, as well as the Capricorn District Municipality Executive Mayor, also heeded the call.
The military Command Council was also well represented with the Deputy Chief Logistics Division Major General T.E. Mulaudzi and the General Officer Commanding SA Army Infantry Formation Major General V.Z. Ngcobo gracing the occasion alongside other generals and admirals.
Captain (SA Navy) Solly Mashigo, arguably the longest serving Officer Commanding within the Defence Works Formation, stood emotionally as he gave his farewell address to the members on parade. He stated that " Today, as a true patriot, as I hand over Command of Regional Works Unit Limpopo, I do so with confidence into the future, challenges will always be there, but, so too will be the dedication, commitment and expertise to serve". He, furthermore, encouraged members of the Regional Works Unit Limpopo to continue striving for excellence, remain innovative and never lose sight of the importance of collective and positive contribution.
As the parade marched past, the SA Army KwaZulu-Natal Band kept the spectators on dancing mood with their carefully selected marching songs. Captain (SA Navy) Solly Mashigo proudly took his last salute as Officer Commanding Regional Works Unit Limpopo.
After the parade, invited guests gathered at the Officers' Mess where Colonel Lundi Ncubukezi made his official address. Major Khathutshelo Mphigalale set the tone for the occasion as he meritoriously directed the program, mesmerising guests with laughter through each item on the program. In his address, Colonel Ncubukezi stated that he is fully aware that command is not a privilege to be enjoyed but rather a duty to be fulfilled with integrity, courage, and, most importantly, accountability. He emphasised that "Command is not in the sword but rather in the discipline behind it".
