Fire is not just flame—it’s a chemical process.

The Fire Tetrahedron explains the four elements needed for a fire to start and continue:

🌬 Oxygen (~21% in air, can sustain down to ~16%)
⚡ Chemical Chain Reaction

A fire doesn’t just burn—
👉 it sustains itself through a chain reaction.

✔ Even if flames die down, heat and gases can remain
✔ When oxygen is reintroduced, rapid fire growth can occur
✔ This is how dangerous conditions like flashover or backdraft develop

🧯 HOW FIREFIGHTERS STOP FIRE

We don’t fight fire randomly—
👉 we break the system:

💧 Cool it (remove heat)
⛽ Starve it (remove fuel)
🌫 Smother it (remove oxygen)
⚡ Interrupt the chain reaction (dry chemical)

Fire behavior is predictable—if you understand it.

🔥 FLASHOVER

Flashover is a rapid and deadly transition that occurs during the Growth Stage of a fire.

As heat builds inside a compartment, hot gases and smoke collect near the ceiling. Radiant heat begins to heat every combustible surface in the room—furniture, curtains, walls, and other materials.

⚠️ When temperatures rise high enough, nearly all combustible materials ignite almost simultaneously.

This event is known as flashover.

Within seconds, a room can transition from a developing fire to a fully involved compartment fire.

🔥 Temperatures during flashover can exceed 930–1300°F, creating conditions that are unsurvivable for occupants and extremely dangerous for firefighters operating inside.

🚒 For firefighters, recognizing the warning signs is critical:
• Rapid heat buildup
• Thick, turbulent smoke
• Lowering smoke layer
• Rollover or flames in the overhead gases

Understanding fire behavior helps firefighters make safer decisions and protect lives.
