**JVD INDUSTRY UPDATE | Expanding FMD Vaccine Production**

South Africa is taking steps to strengthen its response to Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD).

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) has approved a proposal allowing qualifying private companies to use its vaccine technology to help increase local vaccine production.

The aim is to address manufacturing limitations and improve vaccine availability. However, the licensing process, regulatory requirements and implementation still need to be completed, so increased production will take time.

Why does this matter to the wider agricultural industry?

FMD affects more than livestock health. Outbreaks can disrupt animal movement, trade, export opportunities and the businesses that depend on a functioning livestock supply chain.

**Stronger disease control helps protect the people, businesses and supply chains that agriculture relies on.**

JVD INSIGHTS | Fish Meal

Fish meal is a concentrated protein ingredient used in selected animal-feed and aquaculture formulations.

It can supply highly digestible protein and essential amino acids, making it particularly valuable in applications where nutritional performance is a priority.

However, its suitability and cost-effectiveness depend on factors such as protein content, quality, availability and the requirements of the finished feed.

For feed manufacturers, sourcing the right specification is just as important as securing a competitive price.

At JVD Commodities, we understand the importance of connecting businesses with the raw materials their operations require.

The right ingredients make a difference.

JVD INDUSTRY UPDATE | Lower Feed Costs, Different Market Pressures

Lower feed costs and improved grazing are giving parts of South Africa’s livestock sector some breathing room.

According to Absa’s AgriTrends Spring 2026 report, abundant maize supplies are helping reduce input pressure. However, the recovery is not the same across the industry: beef and sheep producers are rebuilding herds, while pork and poultry markets face different supply and pricing pressures.

For feed manufacturers and livestock producers, this highlights how closely feed costs, raw-material prices and livestock market conditions are connected.

Understanding these shifts can help businesses plan purchases, manage stock and make more informed decisions about their input costs.

Because every change in the supply chain can affect the bottom line.

JVD INSIGHTS | Full Fat Soya

Full Fat Soya is a valuable feed ingredient that provides both protein and energyin animal nutrition.

Unlike soybean meal, which has much of its oil removed during processing, Full Fat Soya retains its natural oil content. This makes it a useful ingredient in feed formulations where both protein and energy are important.

For feed manufacturers and livestock producers, the right choice depends on the animal’s nutritional requirements, the overall ration, product quality and cost.

Reliable sourcing and consistent quality help businesses make informed decisions about their feed ingredients.

One ingredient. Two important nutritional contributions.

JVD INDUSTRY UPDATE | What Global Prices Mean for You

Global food prices rose again in September, with cereal prices increasing by 5.1% during the month.

But what does that mean for South African agriculture?

When international grain and oilseed markets move, the impact can eventually filter through to the raw materials used in animal feed — influencing purchasing costs, margins and feed pricing.

Weather conditions, production forecasts, transport disruptions and global supply all play a role in how these markets move.

For producers and feed businesses, keeping an eye on these trends can help with better purchasing decisions, stock planning and managing costs.

At JVD, we keep a close eye on the market so that our clients can make informed decisions about their raw-material requirements.

Because knowing what is happening in the market is one thing. Knowing what it means for your business is what matters.

JVD INSIGHTS | Millers By-products

Not everything that comes out of a milling process is waste.

Millers by-products can provide valuable ingredients for animal feed, making them an important part of an efficient agricultural supply chain.

Products such as bran and other milling by-products can contribute energy, fibre and other nutrients to animal diets, depending on the product and its intended use.

For feed manufacturers and producers, sourcing the right product means considering quality, nutritional value, availability and price.

At JVD Commodities, we help connect supply with demand across the agricultural commodity market.

Making better use of every part of the supply chain.

JVD INDUSTRY UPDATE | Livestock Recovery

There are encouraging signs of recovery across South Africa’s livestock sector.

Improved grazing conditions, abundant maize supplies and lower feed costs are providing some relief to producers following the drought and disease pressures of recent years.

However, the outlook remains mixed. Foot-and-mouth disease and other livestock diseases continue to pose risks, while the developing El Niño could put pressure on grain production and feed costs during the season ahead.

For producers, this makes feed availability, raw-material sourcing and careful cost management increasingly important.

A changing market calls for informed decisions and reliable supply.
