Siyathemba Municipality continues with the Fight Against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide with Thursdays in Black (TiB)

President Ramaphosa’s Four-Point Plan Calls for Urgent Action to Protect Women and Children

Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) remains one of the most serious social challenges confronting South Africa. The continued abuse, assault and murder of women and children demand urgent and coordinated action from all spheres of government, law-enforcement agencies, civil society and communities.

In response to this national crisis, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a Four-Point Action Plan aimed at strengthening the criminal justice system, improving community safety and ensuring greater accountability in the fight against GBVF. Based on this Siyathemba continues to champion this cause. As a visible display support, staff are encouraged to wear black clothing on Thursdays to signify the importance of this fight. The recent incident near the school is evidence that more should be done to make the enviroment safe for women and young girls.

PROVINCIAL HEADS OF DEPARTMENTS AND MUNICIPAL MANAGER’S FORUM OF NORTHERN CAPE IS UNDERWAY IN UPINGTON: 19-20 October 2026

Heads of Departments and Municipal Managers in Northern Cape are gathered in Upington for a combined forum targeting Namakwa, ZF Mgcawu, John Taolo Gaetsewe and Pixley ka Seme Districts.

Chaired and co-chaired by the Director-General in the Office of the Premier, Mr Justice Bekebeke and Ms. Madeleinne Brandt, the Director of Operations at SALGA in Northern Cape; the forum brings together Provincial Heads of Department, District and Local Municipal Managers, Provincial Treasury, COGHSTA, SALGA Northern Cape and other key stakeholders to jointly address systemic municipal challenges and create a platform for open discussions.

The platform supports municipalities through stronger intergovernmental coordination, early warning systems, implementation monitoring, technical problem-solving and the escalation of matters requiring intervention by the relevant authorities.

Key focus areas include municipal financial sustainability, Eskom and Water Board debt, regulatory compliance, infrastructure and service delivery constraints, governance challenges and broader municipal sustainability pressures.

The initiative was introduced as a district-by-district support model, with Frances Baard District Municipality identified as the pilot district. The first and pilot sitting was held on the 7th of September 2026 in Frances Baard District Municipality Council Chambers. Lessons from the pilot have guided the province-wide rollout and this sitting is a product of the intentions to engage all districts and continue with such engagements.

Through this forum, the province aims to strengthen planning, oversight, support and accountability mechanisms to improve municipal performance and service delivery outcomes for communities across the Northern Cape.
