A big shout out to 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day for its donation of, not 67 but, 70 blankets lovingly hand-crafted by volunteers from Dainfern College Group and Cedar Lakes Group. Established in 2013, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day is an international award-winning humanitarian movement dedicated to providing warmth to people in need. The initiative connects a global network of volunteers (often referred to as “KnitWits™ for Madiba”). To date, it has distributed in excess of 180 000 blankets and scarves to hundreds of organisations assisting vulnerable individuals, including orphanages, hospitals, shelters, and impoverished communities.

Each of the 70 crocheted and knitted blankets we received feature a unique design. Because they’re made to last, recipients will be able to cherish them for many years to come. Fifteen blankets have already been distributed to a place of safety for babies and children in Randburg, with another 20 going to Brian and Lerato from Soweto Kickboxing Club, who walk alongside vulnerable young people in Pimville, Soweto. The remaining blankets will be distributed by Tshepo CDI - Homeless Service Centre of U-turn to senior citizens in the Windsor community as part of its Poverty Alleviation Project.

❤️ 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲 ❤️

Doorway to Dignity’s 10th annual Pots of Hope was a resounding success. We are so grateful to God for blessing us with perfect weather and an altogether beautiful day!

We have many people to thank (and will be doing so over the next few days), but this day would not have been possible were it not for the following organisations who supported this event in a variety of ways:
❤️ Ferndale Bible Chapel for allowing us the use of their beautiful grounds and facilities
❤️ Fontainebleau Gemeenskapskerk for the loan of their tables and barrel braais
❤️ Lebang on the Move for transporting tables, braais, charcoal, and oodles of other items
❤️ Postnet Ferndale Village for printing all our posters, menus, coupons, and labels
❤️ Chef MLK School of Cooking for managing the kitchen and restaurant
❤️ Cravin Coffee for providing refreshments for our guests (10% of their sales went to supporting Doorway to Dignity)
❤️ Oasis Water Randburg - Bryanston for donating water for our volunteers
❤️ 1 O One Distributors for donating snacks for our volunteers
❤️ Flourish for pledging R10 of every calendar sale towards supporting Doorway to Dignity
❤️ Trophy Africa for providing and engraving the trophies for our top three potjie chefs
❤️ Enviromall for offering eco-friendly containers and cutlery for our potjie sales at a discounted price

Observed internationally every year on 10 October, World Homeless Day serves to raise awareness of the plight of people experiencing homelessness and hardship and to encourage local communities to work together to ease their suffering.

People caught in the cycle of poverty and homelessness are a familiar sight in South Africa. But what we witness daily is just the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface lies a life that no human being deserves – a life lacking security and dignity, surrounded by crime, theft, prostitution, and gender-based violence.

People often feel that what they do on an individual level is unlikely to make a difference. And so they do nothing. But this is where they’re wrong – touching just one life means they’ve already made a difference. And every individual can call on others to reach out to those who need it most. Doorway to Dignity is privileged to work with such people, and one way they’re showing their support is by taking part in Pots of Hope, our annual awareness-raising event on Saturday, 10 October at Ferndale Bible Chapel. To find out more about this event, please take a look at recent posts on this page.

We are collecting containers to store and freeze the meals that our potjiekos chefs will be donating for Doorway to Dignity’s upcoming Pots of Hope event. While 1.8- to 2-litre ice cream tubs are ideal for storage, containers of all shapes and sizes will be gratefully received. If you’re in the neighbourhood, please drop containers off at our offices.

𝗪𝗛𝗬 𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗛𝗢𝗣𝗘?

This year, Doorway to Dignity’s 10th annual Pots of Hope event takes place on the 10th of October. The date also marks World Homeless Day, which calls attention to the plight of displaced people, many of whom struggle daily to find secure shelter.

While Pots of Hope encourages people – participants, volunteers, and visitors – to come together and have fun, it’s also a wonderful opportunity to provide a hearty and delicious meal to people in need. On the day, about 80 homeless and vulnerable people will be treated to a restaurant experience (something most of them seldom if ever get to enjoy), complete with servers, a set menu of potjie meals, dessert, and cold drinks on offer.

In a first for this year, competitors and visitors will be able to purchase a plate and try out a variety of potjie dishes, with soft drinks also on sale. Funds raised will go towards helping Doorway to Dignity remain sustainable. All remaining food will be packaged and frozen for distribution to pre-selected beneficiaries, including children's feeding schemes, old age homes, and places of safety. We still have a few spaces available for budding potjie chefs, so don’t delay in booking your place. Entry is R600 per corporate team, or R300 per team for individual/non-corporate entries.

To secure your spot, contact Trevor on 062 752 7403.

With less than two months to go, plans are well underway for Doorway to Dignity’s 10th annual Pots of Hope event on Saturday, 10 October 2026. Spaces are filling up quickly, so if you'd like to be one of our potjiekos chefs, don't miss out on the chance to join us in celebrating a double milestone — 10 years of Doorway to Dignity and 10 years of Pots of Hope. Forgive us for the photo dump, but to get a taste of what's in store, take a look at the photos of previous years events.

Here's what's cooking on the day:
• Entries will be judged by a panel of professional chefs, with trophies and prizes for the top three teams.
• About 80 homeless and vulnerable people will be treated to a restaurant-style meal, with servers, a set menu, potjie meals, dessert, and cold drinks on offer.
• Participants and visitors can purchase a plate of potjiekos from a selection of pots, with soft drinks also on sale.
• All remaining food will be packaged and frozen for distribution to pre-selected beneficiaries, including children's feeding schemes, old age homes, and places of safety.
Beyond the competition, it's a chance to slow down, enjoy some social time, and share a plate of good food with good company – all for a cause worth celebrating.

Entry is R600 per corporate team, or R300 per team for non-corporate entries.

To secure your spot, contact Trevor on 062 752 7403.

Not entering but want to cheer on a team? Come along, support the day, and grab a bite or a drink while you're at it!
