UMDONI MUNICIPALITY CONTINUES TO TAKE SERVICE DELIVERY TO RURAL COMMUNITIES

Umdoni Municipality has strengthened its commitment to service delivery with the successful launch of its Rural Roads Maintenance Programme (Re-Gravelling), aimed at improving road conditions, accessibility and mobility for communities across the Municipality.

The programme was officially launched on Monday, 05 October 2026, at Malangeni MPCC, marking another important step in Umdoni’s ongoing efforts to respond to infrastructure needs and improve the quality of life of residents.

The programme will be implemented across seven clusters, covering rural wards throughout Umdoni. The work will focus on maintaining and improving rural roads to ensure that communities have better access to schools, clinics, businesses, public facilities and other essential services.

Her Worship the Mayor, Cllr Mbali Cele Luthuli welcomed the launch and emphasised that service delivery must be felt directly by communities.

“This programme demonstrates that Umdoni continues to take service delivery to our communities. We are committed to ensuring that our rural roads receive the attention they require and that they provide the required relief to communities,” said the Mayor.

The Rural Roads Maintenance Programme forms part of the Municipality’s broader commitment to accelerating service delivery, strengthening infrastructure and addressing the needs of communities across Umdoni.

UMDONI UNITES AGAINST GBVF THROUGH MARCH AND PRAYER

Umdoni Municipality brought together residents, faith-based organisations, youth, men and women in a united stand against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) during a GBVF March and Prayer Day held in Umzinto. The march commenced at the Shell Garage, where members of multi-denominational churches and community members gathered before marching to the Umzinto Town Hall. Participants walked together in a powerful demonstration of solidarity and a call for safer families and communities.

The programme continued at the Town Hall with a sermon delivered by Pastor Oliphant, followed by an emotional candlelight ceremony in memory of those who have lost their lives to GBV and those who continue to live under abuse. The event also commemorated Heritage Day, highlighting the importance of Ubuntu, dignity, respect and compassion as values that should shape the legacy left for future generations.

Addressing the gathering, Umdoni Mayor Councillor M.J. Cele-Luthuli called on the entire community to take responsibility in the fight against GBVF. “As we gather in prayer today, let us remember that prayer must inspire action.” The Mayor also urged men and boys to take a stand against abuse, calling on them to be protectors of their families and communities and to speak out when women and children are harmed.

The gathering ended with a united call for No to Gender-Based Violence and Femicide; Yes to Safe Families; Yes to Safe Communities; and Yes to a Better Umdoni for All.
