GOVAN MBEKI MUNICIPALITY WELCOMES RECOGNITION AT THE 2026 FUTURE OF HR CONFERENCE

Govan Mbeki Municipality welcomed its recognition at the 2026 Future of HR Conference Awards, where it was among five municipalities recognised for excellence in human resource management and governance.

The recognition was announced during the awards ceremony held on Thursday, 15 October 2026, as part of the annual Future of HR Conference, hosted by Topco Media under the theme “HR Without Boundaries: Connecting Capable People, Performance-Enabling Technology and National Progress.”

The municipality was recognised in the Municipal HR Excellence Award category, sponsored by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), alongside Mnquma Local Municipality, uMlalazi Local Municipality, King Cetshwayo District Municipality and Waterberg District Municipality.

The recognition highlights the importance of strengthening human resource management practices, promoting institutional excellence and building a capable, professional and performance-driven municipal workforce.

According to SALGA, the municipalities were recognised for demonstrating governance maturity across the human resources value chain, including the implementation of HR policies, legislative compliance, strategic planning, performance monitoring and continuous institutional improvement.

The assessment also considered the alignment of human resource management practices with each municipality's Integrated Development Plan (IDP), vision, mission and organisational values.

Govan Mbeki Municipality regards this recognition as an important milestone in its ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional capacity, improve employee performance and advance its vision of becoming “A Model City of Excellence” by 2030.

The municipality acknowledges that effective service delivery depends on a skilled, motivated and accountable workforce supported by sound human resource management systems and effective leadership.

The recognition further reinforces the importance of investing in employee development, promoting good governance, strengthening organisational performance and ensuring that municipal employees are equipped to respond effectively to the needs of communities.

Govan Mbeki Municipality extends its appreciation to SALGA and the organisers of the Future of HR Conference for recognising the important role played by municipalities in advancing human resource management excellence within local government.

The municipality also acknowledges the contribution of its Human Resources Section, management and employees towards strengthening internal systems, promoting professionalism and supporting institutional development.

This recognition serves as both an achievement and an encouragement for the municipality to continue improving its human resource management practices, strengthening accountability and building an efficient, responsive and service-oriented administration.

Govan Mbeki Municipality remains committed to creating an enabling working environment that supports employee growth, institutional stability and improved service delivery for the benefit of all residents.

GOVAN MBEKI MUNICIPALITY HOLDS FINAL ORDINARY COUNCIL MEETING OF THE 2021–2026 ADMINISTRATION

Govan Mbeki Municipality held its last Ordinary Council Meeting of the current administration on Friday, 16 October 2026, marking an important milestone as the 2021–2026 Council term draws to a close.

The meeting provided an opportunity for councillors from different political parties, municipal leadership and officials to reflect on the past five years of local governance, acknowledge the challenges experienced, recognise collective contributions and reaffirm the municipality's commitment to serving its communities.

Addressing the Council, the Speaker, Cllr Fikile Magagamela, delivered a message of appreciation and reflection, recognising the contributions made by councillors, the Executive Mayor, members of the Mayoral Committee, municipal management and officials throughout the five-year term.

The Speaker acknowledged that the current administration had navigated a challenging period characterised by service delivery pressures, infrastructure challenges and the need to strengthen institutional stability and municipal governance.

She emphasised that despite political differences, councillors had continued to work within democratic structures towards the common objective of improving the lives of residents and advancing the municipality's vision of becoming “A Model City of Excellence.”

Reflecting on the Council's journey since assuming office in 2021, Cllr Magagamela noted that the municipality had faced considerable challenges that required collective leadership, cooperation and decisive interventions.

She highlighted that democratic governance does not necessarily require councillors to agree on every issue, but rather demands mutual respect, constructive engagement and a shared commitment to serving the public.

The Speaker further acknowledged the role played by different political parties represented in Council, recognising their participation in municipal decision-making, oversight and debates on matters affecting communities.

She emphasised that robust political engagements and disagreements are an essential part of democratic governance, provided that they remain focused on advancing the interests of residents.

Throughout the administration's term, councillors were required to deliberate on matters affecting municipal services, infrastructure development, economic opportunities and the needs of vulnerable communities.

The Speaker reminded councillors that public office carries significant responsibilities and that their primary obligation is to represent the interests of the communities who entrusted them with leadership.

She also expressed appreciation to municipal officials and management for their administrative support and contribution towards the functioning of Council and the implementation of municipal programmes.

In her farewell remarks, Cllr Magagamela encouraged councillors to reflect not only on the decisions taken during their term but also on the impact of their leadership and interactions with communities and colleagues.

She drew inspiration from the late American poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou, reminding councillors of the importance of treating people with dignity, respect and humanity.

The Speaker thanked councillors for their cooperation, guidance and support throughout her tenure, acknowledging that the experience had contributed significantly to her growth and understanding of democratic leadership.

She further encouraged councillors to remain committed to public service, emphasising that the responsibility to contribute towards community development extends beyond holding political office.

The meeting also provided councillors with an opportunity to deliver messages of appreciation, congratulations and condolences.

During these engagements, councillors acknowledged the contributions of their colleagues, municipal management and officials, reflecting on the relationships, lessons and experiences gained throughout the administration's term.

Messages of condolences were extended to bereaved families, while concerns regarding gender-based violence and femicide were also raised.

Councillors further conveyed messages of encouragement and well wishes to matriculants undertaking their final examinations.

The proceedings reflected the significance of political cooperation, mutual respect and institutional continuity in strengthening local government and advancing the interests of communities.

As the 2021–2026 administration approaches the conclusion of its term, the municipality acknowledges the contributions of all councillors, political office-bearers, municipal officials and stakeholders who have played a role in the governance and development of the municipality.

The municipality remains committed to building on the work undertaken during the current administration, promoting accountable and responsive local government and advancing its long-term vision of becoming “A Model City of Excellence.”

The conclusion of the current Council term represents an important chapter in the municipality's democratic journey, while the responsibility to serve residents, strengthen public confidence and improve the quality of life of communities remains ongoing.

GOVAN MBEKI MUNICIPALITY ACCELERATES STREETLIGHT AND HIGH-MAST LIGHT REPAIRS

Govan Mbeki Municipality is intensifying maintenance and repairs of non-functional streetlights and high-mast lights across eMbalenhle, Leandra, Secunda, Evander and Kinross to improve public safety and service delivery.

In eMbalenhle and Leandra, maintenance teams are replacing faulty daylight switches, damaged floodlights and electrical components on high-mast lights.

In Secunda, Evander and Kinross, repairs include the replacement of damaged cables, faulty LED lights and circuit breakers to improve the reliability of streetlights.

The municipality acknowledges the inconvenience and safety concerns caused by inadequate public lighting, particularly for motorists, pedestrians, businesses and residents travelling at night.

The municipality condemns the vandalism and theft of public lighting infrastructure, which undermine service delivery, delay repairs and place an additional financial burden on municipal resources.

Residents are urged to protect municipal infrastructure and report incidents of vandalism, theft and suspicious activities to the relevant authorities.

The damage to public infrastructure compromises community safety and diverts resources intended for essential service delivery.

The municipality remains committed to improving public lighting across its jurisdiction and appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents while maintenance work continues.

Protect municipal infrastructure.

Together, we can build safer, brighter and more secure communities.
