SEASONAL WATER DISCOLOURATION

The Municipality is aware of isolated reports of slight water discolouration in some areas, including Universiteitsoord and Kayamandi, following this weekโ€™s rainfall.

This seasonal occurrence is caused by natural tannins released from vegetation, particularly fynbos, in catchment areas during rainfall. Although water undergoes treatment and filtration, increased tannin levels may not be entirely removed, resulting in a slight colour tint in the treated water.

The Municipality continues to monitor and test water quality to ensure compliance with drinking water standards. This slight colour tint does not indicate that water is unsafe; safety is determined through ongoing water quality testing.

Stellenbosch Municipality has been recognised among just 197 organisations worldwide for excellence in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), receiving the prestigious 2026 Esri Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award. Announced at the 2026 Esri User Conference in San Diego, USA, the award was presented to Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser at todayโ€™s Council Meeting.

GIS is a technology that captures, analyses and maps location-based data to support informed decision-making, effective spatial planning and improved service delivery.

The international award recognises the Municipalityโ€™s innovative application of GIS technology, placing it among a select group of organisations recognised from more than 100,000 Esri customers worldwide. This achievement places Stellenbosch Municipality among the top 0.2% of Esri customers worldwide!

Executive Mayor Jeremy Fasser said: โ€œStellenbosch is positioning itself as a national leader in GIS and responsible spatial planning. Having recently hosted the national GIS conference, this international recognition reinforces our commitment to using technology and reliable data to plan responsibly and build sustainable communities.โ€
