SITI SRA – Weekly Safety Update
19 – 25 October 2026

SITI officers remained active across the area this week, responding to public safety concerns, assisting community members and working closely with Law Enforcement, SAPS and security partners. Key incidents included the recovery of a hijacked vehicle, the safe return of a victim to his family and assistance in a vehicle pursuit and recovery.

* Hijacked vehicle recovered, victim safe
On Sunday, SITI officers spotted a grey Fiat that had been reported hijacked, with the possibility that the victim was still inside. With the help of Law Enforcement, the vehicle was stopped at the corner of Dorp Street and Adam Tas Road. Three suspects were arrested and handed over to SAPS, and the victim was safely reunited with his family.

* Vehicle pursuit and recovery
On Thursday morning, SITI SRA assisted JSRA and other security partners in pursuing a vehicle linked to a recent motor vehicle theft. The suspects threw items from the vehicle during the chase before abandoning it at a dead end and fleeing on foot. The vehicle was recovered and handed to SAPS, and the discarded items, suspected of being used in vehicle thefts, were handed in at Stellenbosch SAPS.

Other activities this week
• Complaints about bin scratchers, begging, illegal car guards, people sleeping in public spaces, unauthorised structures and illegal trading were attended to with Law Enforcement, with fines issued where necessary.
• A reckless driver was fined and warned with the help of Law Enforcement.
• Officers called EMS for a person who fell ill, and for a woman in labour; both were taken to hospital.
• Multiple stop-and-search operations led to the confiscation and destruction of dangerous weapons and drug paraphernalia.

Thank you to Law Enforcement, SAPS and all our security partners.
Together we keep Stellenbosch safe.

DID YOU KNOW? | WEEK 4: DUMPING & LITTER

Our streets, sidewalks and public spaces belong to everyone, and keeping them clean is a shared responsibility.

Under the Stellenbosch Municipality’s Roads and Streets By-law:

* No illegal dumping: Garden refuse, rubble, vehicle parts and other waste may not simply be left in streets, on sidewalks or in public places.

* Prevent spills: Certain waste and materials transported through public spaces must be properly covered and contained to prevent spills. If anything is spilled or dropped, it must be removed within a reasonable time.

* Cigarette butts are litter too! Even small items contribute to dirty streets and public spaces.

Clean streets make Stellenbosch more pleasant, welcoming, and safer for everyone.

Help keep Stellenbosch clean by reporting it to Stellenbosch Municipality.

DID YOU KNOW? | TREES, VERGES & SIGHTLINES

Thinking of planting, trimming or removing trees, shrubs or plants along the pavement or roadside outside your property?

Under the Stellenbosch Municipality Roads and Streets By-law, prior written municipal permission is required to plant, cut, remove or damage trees, shrubs or plants in streets, sidewalks, walkways and public places. Plants placed in these areas also become municipal property.

Property owners may be required to prune vegetation that obstructs public areas or interferes with overhead wires. At intersections, vegetation, walls, hedges and fences must not compromise the safety of road users.

Good visibility and well-managed public spaces help make our streets safer for everyone.

Know the by-law. Respect our shared spaces.

DID YOU KNOW? | KEEP OUR SIDEWALKS CLEAR

Sidewalks are shared public spaces, and keeping them clear helps make Stellenbosch safer and more accessible for everyone.

Under the Stellenbosch Municipality Roads and Streets By-law, placing steps, posts, structures, plants or other obstructions on sidewalks and other public street areas is regulated and generally requires prior written municipal permission.

Goods should also not be left on sidewalks or in public spaces beyond the reasonable time needed for loading or off-loading.

Clear sidewalks are especially important for pedestrians, wheelchair users, people with prams and anyone who needs safe, unobstructed access.

A little consideration goes a long way towards keeping our town welcoming and accessible.

KEEP THE WAY CLEAR. KEEP STELLENBOSCH ACCESSIBLE.

Stellenbosch Street By-Law series:

DID YOU KNOW? | A “STREET” IS MORE THAN JUST THE ROAD

When we think of a street, we often think only of the road we drive on. But under Stellenbosch Municipality’s Roads and Streets By-law, the meaning is broader.

It also includes areas such as sidewalks, footpaths, cycle paths and verges.

This means that the public space directly outside your home or business may form part of the street environment and be subject to municipal rules.

Understanding how our streets and public spaces are defined is a good starting point for using them responsibly.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more “Did You Know?” posts highlighting some of the municipal rules that apply to our streets and shared public spaces.

Know the by-law. Respect our shared spaces.
