ANC AMATHOLE REGION STATEMENT ON THE ANC CANDIDATES LIST
The Regional Executive Committee (REC) notes the candidates list published by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) for the upcoming 2026 Local Government Elections.
The REC has received concerns from branches and members of the ANC regarding the exclusion from the list of certain branch nominated candidates in the published IEC list, including the non- registration of Mnquma ward 9 ANC candidate.
Prior to the publication of lists by IEC, the REC learnt during the signing of IEC acceptance forms that several candidates were not in the IEC system, as such, did not receive acceptance forms. A special REC meeting was immediately convened to update the REC on the developments.
The REC resolved to write to the Provincial Secretary for the attention of PEC officials, the Provincial List Committee (PLC), the Secretary General, and the Electoral Commission to query these suspicious alterations and to demand that corrective and disciplinary measures be implemented against the perpetrators.
The changes were highly suspicious as the REC understood that both the PEC extended and the NEC extended had adopted the regional list without any amendments.
According to the NEC adopted guidelines for 2026 Local Government Elections candidate selection process; changes to the list produced by the RIVP can only be made by the extended PEC and the extended NEC, only if such changes receive 80% support from the attendees.
To date, the REC has not received formal feedback regarding the circumstances that led to the unceremonious removal of the affected candidates. However, the REC is aware that the Secretary General has instituted a forensic investigation on the manipulation of candidates list in the Eastern Cape, and we are patiently awaiting outcomes of the investigation.
Following the official publication of candidates lists by IEC, the REC has learnt of further manipulation in the regional list. Some candidates have been reprioritised in the list, while others have been moved from one municipal list to the other. These are all the issues that we trust the ongoing investigation will unravel.
The REC maintains its unwavering confidence in the internal processes of the ANC and commend the steps taken by the office of the Secretary General to uncover the circumstances in which these unauthorised changes were made. We have confidence on the Secretary General to lead this process to its finality.
We call on all ANC members and branches in Amathole region to remain patient with the process, disciplined, and to stay focused on the organisational programme. The REC is fully capable of confronting any attempts to weaken the movement in the region.
In conclusion, the REC commends the ANC branches and the Regional Interviews and Vetting Panel for their diligent work throughout the candidate selection process.
We appeal to all ANC branches, structures, and volunteers to unite, close ranks, and to intensify our ground work to secure an overwhelming ANC victory on the 4 November 2026.
