Reminder that we are in the 2026 fire Season.
We have a few weeks left before the end of controlled burns and fire breaks must be in place.
Remember to obtain approved burning permits before any controlled burning activities can take place to ensure there are enough resources to keep the fire controlled.

No burning is permitted to take place on Fridays and weekends.

Please report any uncontrolled fires to:

When fire danger conditions escalate, a firebreak is put to the test.

A compliant firebreak is not simply a strip of cleared ground, it must be designed, maintained, and effective when it matters most.

In terms of good fire management practice, a firebreak should be:
✅ Wide enough to prevent a fire from jumping across.
✅ Long enough to create a meaningful barrier.
✅ Reasonably free of inflammable material.
✅ Appropriate for the local terrain, vegetation, and climate.

A firebreak that looks good on paper but fails under real fire conditions offers little protection to your property or your neighbours.

As we move through the fire season, now is the time to inspect your firebreaks and ask an important question:
"When conditions turn hostile, will your firebreak hold?"

Effective firebreaks remain one of the most important tools available to landowners in reducing wildfire risk and protecting lives, property, and the environment.

🔥 Firebreaks Are Not Optional – Even on Vacant Land 🔥

Many landowners assume that if a property is vacant or unused, fire prevention responsibilities do not apply. In reality, the South African National Veld and Forest Fires Act, places a duty on all landowners to take reasonable steps to prevent veldfires from starting on or spreading from their property.

Whether your land is an active farm, a residential property, a game farm, or an empty stand, maintaining adequate firebreaks remains your responsibility.
A neglected property can become the starting point of a devastating fire, threatening neighbouring farms, businesses, natural ecosystems, and communities.

Ownership comes with responsibility. If fire can spread from your land, you have a duty to help prevent it.

Protect your property. Protect your neighbours. Protect our landscape.

SUPPORT THE TEAM THAT SUPPORTS YOU

The Tzaneen Emergency Support Team is proud to provide a free emergency support service to our community. Whether assisting with wildfires, supporting emergency operations, conducting prescribed fire operations, or assisting with storm damage, our volunteers dedicate countless hours to keeping our communities safe.

However, providing this service comes at a cost.
Fuel, equipment maintenance, safety gear, training, communications, vehicle upkeep, and operational expenses all require funding. While our members volunteer their time freely, the resources needed to keep our team operational are not free.

If we want this service to remain sustainable and available when our community needs it most, we need the community's support.

Investing in Tzaneen EST is an investment in community safety. Every donation, sponsorship, fundraising contribution, or offer of assistance helps ensure that our volunteers have the tools and resources they need to respond effectively.

When the call comes, we're there for our community. Today, we're asking our community to be there for us.

As winter conditions intensify, Letaba FPA reminds landowners that the burning of waste tyres for frost protection is not endorsed and is strongly discouraged.

Tyre fires release harmful pollutants into the atmosphere, create unnecessary fire risks, and can negatively affect neighbouring communities, workers, soil health, water resources and biodiversity. Responsible agricultural practices are essential for protecting both our environment and the long-term sustainability of the farming sector.

Farmers are encouraged to consider safer alternatives such as organic plant material and clean biomass that do not contain harmful chemicals.

Let's work together to protect our crops, our communities and our environment this winter.

⚠️ High Wind Warning for Today ⚠️

Strong winds are expected across the region today. All landowners who have conducted burns during the past week are urged to closely monitor their burn areas and firebreaks throughout the day.

Windy conditions can quickly reignite hotspots and cause fires to spread beyond control. Please remain vigilant and report any fire activity immediately.

🔥 Stay alert. Stay prepared. Protect your property and your neighbours.
