Refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa are expressing renewed fears for their safety as a September 30 deadline issued by the anti-immigration movement March and March approaches.

The group has called on undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country and has warned of further demonstrations if its demands are not met.

In Durban, refugees who had been living outside the Refugee Reception Centre after fleeing fears of anti-foreigner violence say they remain uncertain about where they can safely stay.

The situation follows clashes between protesters and refugees earlier this month, with at least four people reportedly injured. Hundreds of refugees were subsequently moved from the makeshift camp, with 274 transported to the Lindela facility in Gauteng, while others remained in Durban.

Refugee representatives say the September 30 deadline has heightened anxiety, particularly among those who fear that hostility directed at undocumented migrants could also affect refugees and other foreign nationals.

South African authorities have maintained that private groups have no legal authority to deport people and have warned against taking immigration enforcement into their own hands.

The September 30 deadline comes as migration remains a major issue ahead of South Africaโ€™s local government elections scheduled for November 4.

A Solidarity Mass in honour of Archbishop Dr Alick Banda is currently underway, with Archbishop Ignatius Chama serving as the main celebrant.

The Mass brings together members of the Catholic community and other well-wishers in solidarity with Archbishop Banda.

Shortly after the Mass, Archbishop Banda is expected to proceed to the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), where he has been summoned for questioning in connection with a Toyota Hilux.

The Archbishopโ€™s appearance before the Commission follows the summons issued to him over the vehicle.

President Hakainde Hichilema has departed for Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates for a two-day working visit aimed at strengthening economic cooperation and advancing Zambiaโ€™s investment agenda.

President Hichilema is in the UAE at the invitation of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates.

During the visit, the President is expected to focus on attracting investment and expanding partnerships that can support the Grow Zambia Agenda, particularly through private sector-led economic growth.

A key area of focus will be value addition and industrial development, as Zambia seeks to deepen collaboration with international partners and create opportunities for greater economic activity.

President Hichilema says the visit forms part of efforts to use international partnerships to support the countryโ€™s development objectives.

We wish the Republican President Godโ€™s guidance, protection and safe travels as he undertakes this two-day working visit in Abu Dhabi.

A plane crash in the Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed the lives of 17 people, including two senior officials in the countryโ€™s military justice system.

The crash happened on Friday, September 25, in Kenge, Kwango Province, as the aircraft was travelling from Kikwit towards Kinshasa.

Reports indicate that the aircraft developed a technical problem during the flight and attempted to land in Kenge, where there was no functioning airport. The aircraft subsequently crashed in a residential area and caught fire.

Among those killed were Lieutenant General Joseph Mutombo Katalay Tiende, First President of the High Military Court, and Lieutenant General Lucien-Renรฉ Likulia Bakumi, Auditor General of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The aircraft was a Let-410 operated by TRACEP Congo Aviation. The Congolese authorities have since suspended the companyโ€™s operations across the country pending investigations into the crash.

A judicial investigation has also been opened to establish the facts, circumstances and precise causes of the accident. Authorities say investigators are working to secure the crash site and preserve evidence needed to determine what happened.

The tragedy has left the Congolese military justice system without two of its senior officials and has prompted renewed attention to aviation safety in the country.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is calling for governments to take a more active role in regulating artificial intelligence, warning that relying on technology companies to police themselves is not sufficient.

In an interview with NBCโ€™s Meet the Press, Gates said AI has advanced into areas that require stronger safeguards and monitoring, particularly because of its potential to be misused by people with harmful intentions.

Gates argued that lawmakers and law enforcement agencies need to be involved in determining the safeguards required for AI systems, saying such measures should become mandatory rather than left entirely to individual companies.

He described it as โ€œcompletely irresponsibleโ€ not to require AI systems to have safeguards and monitoring capabilities, while acknowledging that regulation would add some costs for the industry without necessarily bringing development to a halt.

Gates also warned that AI could be used by malicious actors in ways capable of causing catastrophic harm, saying the technology has reached a level where society needs to think carefully about how it is developed and controlled.

His comments come as governments, technology companies and policymakers continue debating how to balance rapid AI development with concerns around security, cyberattacks, biological risks and other potential misuse.

For Gates, the issue is no longer simply about whether AI should advance, but about putting appropriate safeguards in place as the technology becomes increasingly powerful.

Avocado Mining Limited has been convicted after pleading guilty to 10 counts of attempted smuggling involving copper concentrates valued at more than K23.9 million for duty purposes.

The Kalulushi-based mining company appeared before the Economic and Financial Crimes Court Division of the Kitwe Subordinate Court on September 22, 2026, following an attempt in July 2025 to export 13 consignments of copper concentrates that had allegedly been declared as Portland cement.

The Zambia Revenue Authority says the misdeclaration was made through 13 bills of entry, with the consignments attracting approximately K4 million in export duty.

The company was convicted under the Customs and Excise Act and fined K100,000, with the fine due by September 30, 2026.

ZRA Corporate Communications Manager Oliver Nzala says Avocado Mining has separately paid K5.4 million in assessed duty and penalties and reimbursed the State K1.5 million in prosecution expenses.

The Authority has clarified that those payments are separate from the K100,000 fine imposed by the court.

Meanwhile, ZRA has seized two Toyota Land Cruisers after another customs enforcement operation uncovered suspected misclassification of the vehicles.

The vehicles were intercepted at the Kafue checkpoint on September 18 while being transported in a 40-foot container from the Chirundu One Stop Border Post.

Following a physical inspection at the ZRA Makeni Yard, the Authority determined that the vehicles were brand new despite their declared year-of-manufacture details indicating they were more than two years old.

ZRA says the vehicles had also been incorrectly classified in the customs declaration, resulting in a total tax obligation of more than K2.3 million. Only K192,000 had been paid, leaving a difference of about K2.1 million.

The two vehicles were subsequently seized under the Customs and Excise Act.

ZRA has since warned importers, exporters, transporters and clearing agents against submitting false, incomplete or inaccurate customs declarations, saying such practices affect revenue collection and disadvantage businesses that comply with the law.

The Authority says it will continue using intelligence-led operations, risk-based inspections and post-clearance audits to identify customs offences and will pursue enforcement action, including prosecution, where violations are established.
