Chikankata District has recorded another milestone in infrastructure development following the handover of three community projects under the Output and Performance-Based Road Contract (OPRC) programme in Malabo, Malala Ward.
The projects include a market shelter, water scheme and ablution block, aimed at improving trading conditions, access to water and sanitation for the local community.
Speaking during the handover, Chikankata District Commissioner, Mr. Timothy Chipolyonga urged beneficiaries to take ownership of the facilities and ensure they are properly used, protected and maintained for the benefit of present and future generations.
The handed over projects are additional infrastructure and community facilities that have come as part of the broader development associated with the OPRC programme.
In Chikankata District, the Output and Performance-Based Road Contract (OPRC) system is actively being used to transform local rural infrastructure through the World Bank-financed Improved Rural Connectivity Project (IRCP).
The Road Development Agency (RDA) of Zambia manages this specific program, which is designed to move away from old, short-term patch-up contracts and transition to long-term road quality management.
The roads being worked in Chikankata District under this project include:
* Malabo - Hanyulu
* Chikani Sch - Simwaambwa
* Nameembo Sch - Mubuyu Farm
* Naluama - Kasengo - Nega-nega
* Road leading to Chief Naluama's Palace
And speaking on behalf of the Council Secretary, Director of Engineering Services, Eng. Chikumbuso Banda, has commended the Road Development Agency (RDA), Government and all stakeholders for supporting infrastructure development in Chikankata.
Speaking earlier, Malala Ward Councillor, Chris Hamoonga, has appealed to the community to jealously guard the newly handed-over facilities and refrain from acts of vandalism.
Councillor Hamoonga urged residents to take ownership of the facilities, noting that their proper care and protection will ensure they continue benefiting the community for years to come.
