A new chapter has begun for hundreds of Social Cash Transfer beneficiaries in Chingola following the launch of the distribution of 1,792 mobile phones aimed at improving access to electronic payments and Government services.
Speaking during the flagging-off ceremony held at Chingola Combined School, Chingola District Commissioner Mr. Howard Kamwandi described the initiative as a historic milestone, noting that it is the first time Government has provided mobile phones directly to Social Cash Transfer beneficiaries.
He said the programme demonstrates Governmentโs commitment to ensuring that vulnerable citizens are not left behind in the countryโs development agenda.
Mr. Kamwandi explained that the phones will help beneficiaries receive their Social Cash Transfer payments more securely and conveniently through their own devices, reducing challenges associated with using borrowed phones and minimizing disputes over access to funds.
He emphasized that Government remains committed to ensuring that all beneficiaries eventually access their payments through personal mobile phones, thereby strengthening financial inclusion and improving service delivery.
Chingola Town Clerk Mrs. Namukolo Kalufyanya welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that will make it easier for beneficiaries to access their funds. She also encouraged members of the public to continue supporting Government programmes and participating in development initiatives, noting that community aspirations play a key role in shaping development interventions.
Meanwhile, Chingola District Social Welfare Officer Mrs. Peninnah Chomba said the distribution of mobile phones will enhance transparency and accountability in the Social Cash Transfer Programme.
She noted that the use of personal mobile phones will help beneficiaries track their payments more effectively and access important information and services with greater ease.
The first phase of the exercise targets elderly beneficiaries and households with persons living with disabilities, who are among the most vulnerable groups under the Social Cash Transfer Programme.
In Chingola District, there are currently 14,426 Social Cash Transfer beneficiaries, with Government continuing its efforts to transition beneficiaries from manual payment systems to electronic platforms as part of the broader drive towards financial inclusion and a cashless economy.
