Mchinji Railway Revival Aims to End “White Elephant” Status on Chipata Side

CHIPATA, Zambia— The Mchinji railway section linking Malawi to Chipata and onward to Mozambique’s Port of Nacala is yet to be reopened, with local officials and traders saying this time the corridor must deliver the commercial traffic it has long promised.

On the Chipata side, the line has largely been a white elephant since its initial revival. Infrastructure was in place, but major cargo movement never materialized, leaving the border and local markets with little economic benefit. Stakeholders now say conditions are different and expect full-scale trade to kick off.

“This line has sat here underused for years,” said a Chipata-based clearing agent. “If the volumes come through now, it will finally justify the investment and create real business for our transporters and traders.”

Malawi’s Ministry of Transport and Public Works said it will continue prioritizing rail and marine transport to cut logistics costs and position the route through Chipata as a regional logistics hub.

Economists in Malawi have called the revival timely. Economist Christopher Mbukwa told Zodiak Online that the return of cargo trains is significant given rising commodity prices tied to heavy reliance on road haulage. Sylvester Namiwa, Executive Director of the Centre for Economic Development Initiative, said shifting more cargo to rail should help lower the cost of basic commodities.

For Chipata, the stakes are direct. Increased rail traffic is expected to drive activity at the border, boost business for transporters and clearing agents, and bring more trade to Chipata. Local business leaders say they are preparing for higher throughput, provided the service remains consistent.

The coming weeks will be decisive. If cargo volumes scale as planned, Chipata could move from idle infrastructure to an active trade hub linking Eastern Zambia, central Malawi, and the Port of Nacala.
