CHITAMBO CHAIRPERSON HIGHLIGHT SUCCESSES AS HE BIDS FAREWELL
Parliament is likely to be dissolved this coming week. This will mark the end of the five-year period for local government leaders, and it will also make way for elections on August 13, 2026.
The local authority has held its last council meeting, where different decisions were made before parliament is dissolved in the next five days.
In his farewell speech, Chitambo Chairperson Mr. Brian Mwelwa talked about the good work his council did during his time as Chairperson. He thanked the government for the support, under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema.
Among the achievements mentioned, he said that during his leadership, the district received classroom blocks, health posts, desks, water reticulation systems, and road infrastructure projects.
He also said that women and young people were supported with grants and loans to help them grow existing businesses and to start new ones. The Chairperson added that thousands of vulnerable people in Chitambo benefited from cash for work programs during his time.
On water supply, he explained that through his discussions with the Lukanga Water and Sewerage Company, a commercial borehole was drilled. He said it is now waiting to be equipped and connected to the supply system.
He then asked government officers in the district to forgive him in case they were harmed or affected while he was carrying out his duties. He also wished the councillors well as they prepare for the upcoming campaigns.
The Council Secretary Mr. Mwiche I Mudala thanked the Chairperson and the councillors for the good teamwork and cooperation during the five-year term.
The Acting District Commissioner, Mr. Anderson Charles and other district government officials attended the meeting.

Chitambo Town Council has completed the community sensitization activity on the Revised Cash for Work program. The activity was meant to explain the new operational guidelines in detail to stakeholders and community members.
The activity was led by Council Officers and from departments including Community Development and Social Welfare. They gave a clear overview of the programβs objectives, eligibility criteria, targeting systems and payment mechanisms.
WDCs, CWACs and Data Entry Clerks were also present to support the engagement.
The government introduced Phase 2 of the Revised Cash for Work program after revising the operational guidelines. This was done to give clear direction for how the R-C4W program should be implemented.
The revised guidelines cover important areas such as program coverage, eligibility criteria, beneficiary targeting and verification, grievance redress management mechanisms, payment modalities and cross-cutting issues like gender, disability inclusion, environmental safeguards, and social accountability.
The team conducted community sensitization activities across the district. Community members appreciated the government for revising the guidelines. implementation of the Phase 1 program.
Some of the provisions in the Revised Cash for Work guidelines are as follows:
- Only individuals from households that meet the eligibility criteria will turn up for registration through self registration.
- Screening of potential beneficiaries will be done using the R-CFW Application Tool. The tool will confirm eligibility, remove duplicates and flag double dipping.
- After registration, successful beneficiaries will be informed through a list that will be posted on Chitambo Town Council official communication channels.
- Beneficiaries under R-CFW will also include Persons with Disabilities and individuals who left the expanded Social Cash Transfer but are willing to work.
- The maximum amount a person can earn is K600 in any given month. This comes from a maximum of ten (10) days of work at K60 per person per day.
- Public works must be done only when funds are available to pay beneficiaries and the works must be within the budget.
- WDCs who will help supervise the works on behalf of Chitambo Town Council .
- CWACs will help in identifying and listing of beneficiaries .
