FATAL ROAD ACCIDENT CLAIMS LIFE OF PEDAL CYCLIST IN KALOMO
A 54-year-old pedal cyclist of German Compound in Kalomo has died following a fatal road traffic accident involving a Mitsubishi Canter motor vehicle along the Great North Road in Kalomo District.
The accident occurred on Friday, May 22, 2026, around 11:50 hours, approximately two kilometres south of Kalomo Town.
According to a statement issued by Southern Province Commanding Officer, Mr. Moono Namalongo, the accident involved a Mitsubishi Canter bearing registration number AJB 6393, driven by Mr. Paul Hamazabangana, aged 45, who was travelling from south to north along the Great North Road.
Police say the cyclist, identified as Mr. Mark Tembo, aged 54, of German Compound in Kalomo, was riding a bicycle from north to south when the accident happened.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident occurred when the driver of the Mitsubishi Canter was turning left and allegedly hit the cyclist, who was waiting to join the main road.
Mr. Tembo sustained fatal injuries and was rushed to Request Muntanga Level One Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The body of the deceased has since been deposited in the Kalomo Urban Clinic Mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Mitsubishi Canter escaped uninjured. The vehicle sustained damage to the front left wheel and a cracked front windscreen, while the bicycle was extensively damaged.
The Zambia Police Service has since urged motorists and cyclists to exercise caution and strictly observe traffic regulations in order to prevent avoidable road accidents.
Police further advised drivers to ensure roads are clear before turning or joining traffic, while cyclists have been encouraged to remain alert and visible when using public roads.

CHOMA CENTRAL ASPIRING MP MOURNS CHIJABO VICTIMS, CALLS FOR ACTION ON ILLICIT BREW

UPND aspiring Member of Parliament for Choma Central, Moses Baker Chakwana, has expressed deep sorrow over the deaths of residents who allegedly died after consuming an illicit alcoholic brew commonly known as Chijabo in Zambia Compound, Choma District.
Mr. Chakwana visited bereaved families in the affected community to convey his condolences and offer support during the difficult period following the tragic incident which has so far claimed 23 lives.
Through the Chakwana Foundation, the aspiring lawmaker donated assorted food items, including 25-kilogram bags of breakfast mealie meal, to affected families. The Foundation also facilitated transport for ferrying bodies from Shampande Clinic to Choma General Hospital on the first day of the outbreak.
Speaking during the visit, Mr. Chakwana described the incident as unprecedented in Choma, saying the loss of many young lives at once had left the community devastated.
“My heart is broken seeing so many young people die at once from the same beer,” he said.
He urged residents to remain united and seek comfort from God during the mourning period, while emphasizing the need for collective efforts in combating substance abuse and other illicit activities affecting young people.
Mr. Chakwana said the Chakwana Foundation remains committed to supporting initiatives aimed at protecting youths from the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
He further expressed confidence that the Government under President Hakainde Hichilema would institute thorough investigations into the matter and ensure that those responsible for manufacturing and distributing the illicit brew are brought to justice.
Meanwhile, the death toll linked to the suspected poisonous brew continues to rise, with another fatality reported today.
Authorities have since launched investigations into the matter as the community grapples with one of the worst suspected illicit alcohol tragedies recorded in the district.

CHOMA RECORDS FIVE SUSPECTED ILLICIT ALCOHOL-RELATED DEATHS
Choma, May 15, 2026.
Five people have died in Zambia Compound in Choma District in suspected cases linked to the consumption of illicit locally brewed alcohol commonly known as kachasu, Gwala, and Chijabu.
The Zambia Police Service has since launched investigations into the sudden and unnatural deaths which occurred between May 13 and May 14, 2026.
According to Southern Province Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo, preliminary investigations indicate that all the deceased persons are believed to have consumed the same locally brewed alcoholic substances before developing severe health complications.
Mr. Namalongo said the incidents were reported to Shampande Police Post at different times on May 14, 2026.
He identified the deceased as 44-year-old Bornface Muchenga of Zambia Compound, originally from Shabambala Village in Kalomo District; 52-year-old John Kwalombota of Zambia Compound, originally from Natemba Village in Kazungula District; 38-year-old Coaster Katowa, originally from Namwala District; 45-year-old Chrispine Muchindu of Choma District; and 44-year-old Michael Mulenga, originally from Mporokoso District.
Mr. Namalongo explained that the victims reportedly complained of symptoms such as body weakness, stomach pains, vomiting, dizziness, bleeding from the mouth, and discharge of white substances from the mouth shortly after consuming the suspected illicit alcohol.
He said some of the victims were rushed to Shampande Clinic before being referred to Choma General Hospital, where they later died while receiving treatment, while another victim was found dead in his house.
The Southern Province Commanding Officer further disclosed that two other male adults who allegedly consumed the same alcohol are currently receiving treatment after being referred to Choma General Hospital from Shampande Clinic. He said the two are in stable condition.
Meanwhile, all five bodies have been deposited in the mortuary at Choma General Hospital awaiting postmortem examinations to establish the exact causes of death.
Police have since intensified investigations and are searching for the suspected brewer of the illicit alcohol, who is believed to have fled the area following the incident.
Mr. Namalongo has warned members of the public against consuming illicit and unregulated alcoholic substances, stating that such drinks may contain dangerous toxic chemicals that pose serious health risks and can lead to death.
He further urged members of the public to purchase alcohol only from lawful and regulated sources and to report illegal brewing activities to the nearest police station.

REFEREE KILLED DURING THE ANDREW LUBUSHA TOURNAMENT IN CHIPANGALI.
A 55-year-old football referee has allegedly been beaten to death by players and supporters during the Andrew Lubusha football tournament in Chipangali District.
The incident happened on yesterday between 12:05 hours and 13:30 hours at Mchenga Primary School Grounds in Chief Mafuta’s area during a replayed match involving Mikango United and Leopard United football teams.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba has identified as Donald Tonga of Madalistso Farm in Chief Mafuta’s area.
Mr. Mweemba has told Breeze FM News that the football tournament, organised by Chipangali Member of Parliament Andrew Lubusha, involved 16 teams competing on a knockout basis for a K5,000 prize fund.
He says during an earlier match played on May 5, confusion erupted after the referee awarded a penalty to Leopard United while Mikango United was leading 2-1, forcing the game to be postponed.
A meeting involving both teams was later held on May 6 where it was agreed that the match would be replayed from the first minute.
Mr. Mweemba says the replayed match resumed and that trouble started during the first half after a foul was allegedly ignored by the referee, angering players from Mikango United who immediately confronted him.
The players, together with some supporters, allegedly assaulted the referee using fists, kicks, stones, sticks and a bamboo stick as he attempted to flee from the pitch.
Some football fans reportedly tried to rescue him but failed.
The injured referee was taken to Chamasongo Clinic where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

MWIINDE CHAMPIONS SANITATION DEVELOPMENT IN CHOMA SOUTH

CATTLE OWNER SUFFERS HEAVY LOSS AFTER TRUCK RAMS HERD IN MONZE
MONZE, May 6, 2026
A cattle owner in Monze District, identified as Alex Mainza, has suffered a significant loss after a truck rammed into his herd of cattle in the early hours of Wednesday morning along the Gwembe–Chisekesi Road.
The incident occurred around 06:00 hours between Luumba Moonya signpost and Makoye Bridge as the animals were being driven to a nearby dip tank.
Approximately 15 cattle were struck by a truck reportedly carrying pipes for a drilling company. Ten of the animals died on the spot, while five others sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
Mr. Mainza described the incident as devastating, stating that the cattle were his primary source of livelihood and played a crucial role in supporting his children’s education.
He further disclosed that the truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident but was later apprehended in Gwembe Township. The suspect is currently in police custody at Chisekesi Police Station.
Mr. Mainza has since appealed to members of the public and well-wishers for assistance, noting that the loss has left him in a difficult financial situation.
Police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
