Ground breaking ceremonies at Kapiri and Fisenge by His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema and Minister of Transport and Logistics Honourable Frank Tayali MP respectively were held on Tuesday, 21st May, 2024.

The ceremonies that were running simultaneously were for the official commencement of works for the upgrading of the 327km Lusaka-Ndola road to dual carriageway and rehabilitation of the 45 kilometres Luanshya-Fisenge-Masangano road using the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model of financing at a cost of over USD $600 million. This marked another fulfilment of a campaign promise made by the UPND of creating an economic viable and sustainable road network in the country, after delivering on the Chingola, Chililabombwe - Kasumbalesa road.

President Hakainde Hichilema summarised his speech by emphasizing that the rehabilitation of the roads in question is not meant only benefit to the people living in the areas that the roads pass through or lead to but that its for the benefit of the whole country as the economic benefit of the project will be felt by the nation at large.

The minister further praised the president for the job well done for the people of the Copperbelt province whom he said were being subjected to bad news after bad news in the recent past.

" The people on the copperbelt, where subjected to bad news after bad news in the recent past, if its not gassing, its closure of Mopani and KCM..... That is now a thing of the past as just in 2 and half years of the UPND in government under the leadership of President Hakainde Hichilema, Copperbelt is being resurrected with the reopening of both Mopani and KCM, the resurrection of 28 shaft in Luanshya, the rehabilitation of the Chingola-Kasumbalesa road and the commencement of works to upgrade the notorious Chibuluma road in Kitwe into a concrete road." The Minister Said.

The Minister also took the opportunity to address the stakeholder involved the road works. He urged the Main Contractor to make sure that they employ as many locals and sub contract as many local contractors as possible in the construction works so as for them to benefit from the project, something he vowed to take personal. He also warned those that will be employed and engaged as sub contractors to work at the pace of the main Contractor so as to finish the project on time.

Guest of Honour at the Fisenge ceremony, Hon. Frank Tayali MP who is also Transport and Logistics Minister said government is not interested in doing cosmetic projects but economically viable projects, hence the reason to priotize this road. Hon.Tayali also said that by undertaking this project, it will help mitigate the number of fatal road traffic accidents that have happened on this road.
" The country has a lot of people that were not sick but were victims fatal road traffic accidents on this road. The upgrade of the Lusaka- Ndola road into a dual carriageway, we hope will reduce the number of RTAs in the country as this road accounts for about 60% of RTAs countrywide....." Hon. Tayali said.
