ROAD PATCHING AND DRAINAGE WORKS DOMINATE REVISED CASH FOR WORK IDENTIFICATION EXERCISE

14th May, 2026 - Road patching, drainage clearing and vegetation control have emerged among the major priority works identified under the Revised Cash for Work (R-CFW) programme as the identification exercise covered seven more wards today.

The exercise was conducted in Freedom, Maramba, Mwalibonena, Kariba, Mosi-oa-Tunya, Dr. Mubitana and Libuyu wards where communities identified various labour-intensive works aimed at improving the environment and community infrastructure.

Among the common works identified were sand scooping, unblocking of drainages, vegetation control and road maintenance. In wards such as Mosi-oa-Tunya, communities highlighted the urgent need for pothole patching, while in Libuyu Ward, gravelling and opening up of roads aswell as the installation of culverts was also identified as an important intervention to improve accessibility and ease movement within the area.

The proposed road works are expected to help improve mobility for both motorists and pedestrians, reduce water accumulation on roads during and after the rainy season, and enhance access to communities. In some areas, sand washed onto roads has affected movement, making sand scooping an important intervention to help make roads passable again.

The works will also contribute to cleaner surroundings and improved public safety while creating temporary employment opportunities for beneficiaries under the Revised Cash for Work programme.

The identification exercise continues to provide communities with an opportunity to prioritise projects that directly respond to their needs while promoting environmental management and sustainable community development.

REVISED CASH FOR WORK TARGETS GARBAGE, BLOCKED DRAINAGE AND OVERGROWN VEGETATION IN NAKATINDI, LIZUMA AND DAMBWA CENTRAL

The Revised Cash for Work Programme today continued with identification of priority works in Nakatinda, Lizuma and Dambwa Central Wards, where major concerns highlighted by communities included uncollected garbage, blocked drainage systems and overgrown vegetation.

The exercise this morning was conducted with the involvement of community champions and stakeholders supporting the Keep Zambia Clean campaign, among them Benjamin Mibenge, who stressed the importance of maintaining a clean environment and discouraging littering in communities.

He noted that poor waste disposal habits continue to contribute to blocked drainages and unhealthy surroundings, adding that community participation is key to ensuring that the programme achieves lasting impact.

Residents were encouraged to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean and to support the works that will soon be undertaken under the Revised Cash for Work Programme.

The identified works are expected to improve sanitation, enhance drainage flow and create cleaner and safer environments within the affected communities.
