The Governance and Development Advocates Zambia (GODAZA) has called on President Hakainde Hichilema to intervene diplomatically to help prevent further conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), warning that instability could threaten Zambia’s economic interests.

GODAZA Executive Director Elias Mulenga said renewed fighting in the neighbouring country could disrupt cross-border trade and undermine plans for cooperation between Zambia and the DRC in developing critical minerals for electric vehicle production.

The call follows the launch of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), a new politico-military coalition led by former DRC president Joseph Kabila and including figures from the AFC/M23 movement.

The alliance was announced in Goma on October 12, amid an ongoing conflict in eastern DRC.

GODAZA WELCOMES HH PROGRESSIVE PRONOUNCEMENTS

The Governance and Development Advocates Zambia (GODAZA) has welcomed the progressive pronouncements made by President Hakainde Hichilema during the official opening of the First Session of the Fourteenth National Assembly.

GODAZA Executive Director Elias Mulenga stated that the President's address outlined a comprehensive and forward-looking agenda for national development.

Mulenga added that the commitment to increasing maize production to 10 million tonnes will strengthen food security and boost agricultural exports.

He observed that the target of expanding electricity generation capacity to 10,000 megawatts will address the country's energy challenges and support industrial growth.

Mulenga noted that the plan to increase annual copper production to 3 million tonnes will maximise the benefits of the mining sector for all Zambians.

He advanced that the goal of doubling annual international tourist arrivals to 5 million will create jobs and generate much-needed foreign exchange.

Mulenga said that the establishment of public universities in provinces without them will promote equitable access to higher education.

He affirmed that the recruitment of more teachers and health workers demonstrates the government's commitment to improving social services.

Mulenga emphasised that the increase in the Constituency Development Fund from K1.6 million to K40 million per constituency will bring development closer to the people.

He further stated that the transition to electric vehicles for all government institutions will reduce dependence on imported fuel and promote cleaner energy.

Mulenga observed that the formalisation of artisanal and small-scale mining will protect lives and enhance national revenue collection.

He urged all citizens to support the implementation of these progressive measures for the benefit of the nation.

Mutual Engagement resolves concerns Diplomatically

GODAZA backs govt on EU diplomatic engagement

GOVERNANCE and Development Advocates Zambia (GODAZA) has backed Government’s decision to engage the European Union through diplomatic channels over concerns surrounding Zambia’s post-election situation.

GODAZA executive director Elias Mulenga said Government has handled the matter in a mature, measured and diplomatic manner.

Mulenga said the decision to pursue dialogue instead of confrontation is important in maintaining Zambia’s relationship with the European Union.

“We commend the Government for choosing constructive engagement and dialogue rather than confrontation,” Mulenga said.

He explained that the approach reflects responsible governance and a maturing democracy in Zambia.

Mulenga cited Article 41 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, which he said promotes mutual respect for sovereignty and friendly relations between states.

He also pointed to Article 14 of the Constitution of Zambia, saying it provides for a foreign policy based on mutual respect and cooperation.

According to Mulenga, Zambia and the European Union have a long-standing partnership built around democracy, human rights, good governance and sustainable development.

He said cooperating partners have a right to raise concerns, just as a sovereign country has the right to provide its position through established diplomatic channels.

Mulenga has, however, cautioned against turning bilateral concerns into public confrontations that could damage relations between Zambia and the EU.

“Bilateral concerns should not be turned into public confrontation that undermines mutual trust,” he said.

Mulenga has since appealed to the European Union to continue using the Political Dialogue Framework provided for under Article 8 of the Samoa Agreement when addressing concerns with Zambia.

GODAZA’s statement comes after Government challenged a European Parliament resolution on Zambia’s post-election situation and called for formal engagement with EU institutions.

Government has maintained that the resolution was adopted before the final report of the EU Election Observation Mission was published and without prior engagement with the Zambian authorities.

Elections over, let’s reconcile and rebuild Zambia - GODAZA

GOVERNANCE and Development Advocates Zambia (GODAZA) has called on Zambians to put political differences aside and embrace peace and reconciliation following the conclusion of the 2026 general elections.

GODAZA executive director Elias Mulenga said the country must now close the election chapter and concentrate on rebuilding trust, keeping communities safe and creating an environment where citizens can freely conduct their businesses.

Mulenga has urged citizens to refrain from violence, intimidation and harassment, saying political differences should not be allowed to destroy relationships or threaten the peace of communities.

“Political differences are temporary; our common future is shared, bordering on love for one another,” Mulenga said.

He said Zambians should choose dialogue over confrontation and respect over retaliation, while allowing the election outcome to stand through lawful and peaceful processes.

Mulenga has further called for the protection of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation or preference, saying everyone deserves equal dignity and safety.

He said communities should remain inclusive so that residents can participate in social and economic activities without fear.

Mulenga has also appealed to political leaders, their supporters and community groups to work together in rebuilding stability and public trust.

He said the post-election period should be remembered as a time when Zambia chose healing and reconciliation instead of deepening political divisions.

“Peace and reconciliation starts now and it involves every Zambian citizen,” Mulenga said.

GODAZA has encouraged all Zambians to work together in ensuring that the country remains peaceful and stable as it moves forward after the elections.
