ECZ Launches "Count Me In" Publicity and Voter Education Campaign
The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) today, 1st June 2026, launched the Publicity and Voter Education "Count Me In" Campaign for the 2026 General Election at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre.
In her address, ECZ Chairperson Mrs. Mwangala Zaloumis, SC, emphasized that publicity and voter education are complementary pillars of the campaign. She explained that while voter education equips citizens with the knowledge they need to effectively participate in elections, publicity ensures that essential electoral information reaches people wherever they are.
The "Count Me In" campaign marks a significant step in ensuring that every eligible citizen is well-informed and empowered to exercise their democratic right.

MANDEVU CONSTITUENCY MONITORS CDF SECONDARY BOARDING SCHOOL BURSARY BENEFICIARIES
A team from Lusaka City Council has conducted monitoring and evaluation visits to various secondary boarding schools to verify the status of learners benefiting from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Secondary Boarding School Bursary.
The exercise aims to ensure that public funds allocated under the bursary programme reach the intended vulnerable learners, and that beneficiaries are actively attending classes and making academic progress.
Through physical verification and engagement with school authorities, the monitoring team is confirming enrollment status, attendance and the overall welfare of supported learners.
The Secondary Boarding School Bursary is a component of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) provided by government to supplement its vision of supporting vulnerable learners enrolled in boarding schools.
The programme seeks to improve access to education and ensure that financially disadvantaged pupils remain in school and complete their studies.
Monitoring bursary beneficiaries promotes transparency, accountability and the effective utilization of public resources.
The exercise helps prevent misuse of funds by confirming that support reaches genuine beneficiaries, while identifying cases where learners have failed to report to school or discontinued their studies.
The monitoring visits also provide an opportunity to assess the effectiveness of the programme and identify any challenges affecting learners’ academic performance and well-being.
This initiative forms part of Lusaka City Council’s commitment to ensuring that Constituency Development Fund interventions deliver meaningful benefits to communities through investments in education and human capital development.

REHABILITATION OF KALONJE–KATE ROAD MAKES SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS IN KANYAMA UNDER CDF
Rehabilitation works on the Kalonje–Kate Road in Kanyama Township are progressing well under the 2026 Constituency Development Fund (CDF) allocation of approximately K700,000.
The 600-metre road project involves gravelling, grading, and compaction. Once completed, the works will improve accessibility, strengthen the township road network, and enhance mobility for residents.
Officials from the Lusaka City Council’s Department of Engineering and Infrastructure Development have inspected the site to monitor progress and ensure the works comply with required engineering standards and specifications.
The Local Authority remains committed to improving road infrastructure across Lusaka. Through CDF, we are rehabilitating and maintaining township roads to enhance connectivity, improve access to essential services, and support socio-economic development in our communities.
CDF continues to play a central role in upgrading road infrastructure at community level, ensuring residents benefit from safer and more reliable transport links.

LCC CONDUCTS MONITORING AND EVALUATION OF CDF STUDENT BURSARIES
The Lusaka City Council (LCC), through the Department of City Planning, is conducting a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) exercise on Constituency Development Fund (CDF) student bursaries across all seven constituencies in Lusaka.
The exercise assesses the implementation, utilization, and impact of CDF bursary disbursements for the 2026 academic year. Teams are verifying student enrollment, confirming attendance at listed institutions, and ensuring funds are used strictly for tuition and related academic costs as approved by the Constituency Development Fund Committees.
So far, one of the teams has visited Jembo Mission School, Canisius Secondary School, and Rusangu Secondary School, among other institutions in Southern Province. During the visits, the team confirmed the attendance of bursary beneficiaries, reviewed academic records, and discussed welfare matters with students and school administrators to address challenges affecting bursary support.
This M&E process aligns with Government’s directive to strengthen accountability and transparency in managing public resources. It reinforces LCC’s commitment to ensuring CDF interventions deliver measurable benefits, especially for vulnerable learners.
The Lusaka City Council remains committed to the prudent administration of the Constituency Development Fund and to ensuring bursary support reaches all intended beneficiaries.

LCC TO REPLACE UMBRELLA TREES WITH INFRASTRUCTURE-FRIENDLY TREE SPECIES
The Lusaka City Council wishes to inform members of the public that, as part of the ongoing road paving works being undertaken under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), selected umbrella trees located along road reserves and paved sections have been removed.
This exercise is part of the Council’s continued efforts to modernize and improve road infrastructure across the city while ensuring that public investments remain durable, sustainable and beneficial to residents for many years to come.
Although umbrella trees have historically contributed to the city’s greenery and provided shade in many communities, technical assessments have shown that their aggressive and widespread root systems pose a serious threat to road infrastructure. In many cases, the roots extend beneath paved surfaces, causing roads, pavements and pavers to crack, lift and weaken over time. This not only compromises the quality of infrastructure works, but also results in increased maintenance and repair costs.
As the Council accelerates infrastructure development under the CDF programme, there is need to adopt environmentally suitable tree species that can coexist with urban infrastructure without causing damage.
In this regard, the removed umbrella trees will be replaced with palm trees and Ashoka trees, which are more appropriate for urban settings due to their controlled root systems, aesthetic appeal and compatibility with paved environments. The replacement is intended to preserve the city’s greenery while simultaneously enhancing urban beauty, cleanliness and environmental sustainability.
The Council would like to assure members of the public that this initiative is not aimed at reducing the city’s tree cover, but rather at promoting responsible urban planning and creating a balance between environmental preservation and infrastructure development.
The tree replacement programme forms part of the Council’s broader vision of transforming Lusaka into a modern, clean, green and well planned city that supports safe mobility, improved public spaces and sustainable development.
The Lusaka City Council therefore calls upon residents to support ongoing development programmes and protect the newly planted trees, as these efforts are intended to improve the quality of life and create a more attractive environment for present and future generations.
