ZAMBIA DAILY MAIL INNOVATES WITH YOUTH DIGITAL APP AND EXPRESS BUS SERVICE

Zambia Daily Mail has launched two major initiatives aimed at strengthening business sustainability and diversifying its revenue streams through digital innovation and transport services.

The media institution, wholly owned by the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) officially unveiled the rebranded Young Mail newspaper, website and mobile application, alongside the launch of the Daily Mail Express Bus Service, which will initially operate on the Lusaka–Solwezi route.

This occasion marks a significant milestone not only for Zambia Daily Mail, but also for IDC, which provides oversight to its subsidiaries for business sustainability.

Speaking during the launch, Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Mr. Thabo Kawana described the developments as an important step in demonstrating how public media institutions can adapt to the changing business environment.

“These initiatives demonstrate how a public media institution can innovate, diversify and remain relevant in today’s fast-changing digital economy,” Mr. Kawana said.

He said through both print and digital platforms, Young Mail is expected to provide credible, engaging and accessible content tailored to young audiences. Mr. Kawana added that the initiative aligns with Government’s agenda of promoting youth participation in media while combating misinformation through trusted content.

Mr. Kawana further said the Daily Mail Express Bus Service would strengthen courier and logistics operations, improve newspaper distribution and enhance connectivity along the Lusaka–Solwezi route while creating employment opportunities.

IDC Chief Executive Officer Mr. Cornwell Muleya, in a speech read on his behalf by Ms Sombo Kaweza, Head of Portfolio – Manufacturing and Agriculture, described the transformation as a model of resilience and adaptability among State-owned enterprises.

“As IDC, we view this transformation as a model of resilience and adaptability. It demonstrates that State-owned enterprises can innovate, modernise, diversify and compete effectively,” Mr. Muleya said.

He said the rebranding of Young Mail into a digital-first platform targeting readers aged between 10 and 25 years was both bold and timely.

Zambia Daily Mail Board Chairperson Mr. Belly Dubeka said the initiatives form part of the company’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan aimed at repositioning the institution in a competitive media landscape.

“In this environment, it is no longer business as usual. It is survival of the fittest. Those who innovate and distinguish themselves on the market will thrive,” Mr. Dubeka said.

Acting Managing Director Mrs. Emelda Musonda said Young Mail had been repositioned to promote a strong reading culture and provide educational and inspiring content for young people.

She added that the bus service would strengthen the company’s revenue base and contribute to long-term institutional sustainability beyond traditional newspaper operations.

ZPEC OIL REFINERY PROJECT GETS INVESTMENT PROTECTION AND PROMOTION AGREEMENT

The Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) has signed an Investment Protection and Promotion Agreement (IPPA) with Zambia Petrochemical Energy Company Limited (ZPEC), marking another major milestone in the development of the planned US$1 billion petroleum refinery in Ndola.

ZPEC, a joint venture between the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and China’s Fujian Xian Xin, is spearheading the project, which is expected to process up to 60,000 barrels of crude oil per day once operational. The refinery is anticipated to play a key role in strengthening Zambia’s energy security while supporting industrial growth across the region.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, IDC Chief Executive Officer Mr Cornwell Muleya said the agreement signified continued progress towards the realization of the refinery project, following the recent groundbreaking ceremony held in Ndola.

Mr Muleya said the groundbreaking event demonstrated the commitment of all stakeholders and paved the way for construction works to commence later this year. He expressed optimism that by next year, visible progress would have been made on the project.

“We are very happy that we’re reaching this stage,” Mr Muleya said. “We are looking forward to the actualization of our project and by this time next year, we hope there will be very visible signs of what we would have achieved.”

He also commended the ZDA for its collaboration and support in ensuring policy alignment and compliance with all procedures required for the government to fully support the initiative.

Mr Muleya noted that the refinery’s benefits would extend beyond energy security, saying the project would positively impact the lives of many Zambians through economic growth and job creation.

Meanwhile, ZDA Director General Mr Albert Halwampa said the signing of the IPPA sends a strong signal to investors that Zambia remains a safe and attractive investment destination.

Mr Halwampa said the agreement assured investors of the security of their investments and highlighted Zambia’s peaceful environment and stable policy framework.

"We're very proud to have signed the IPPA because it gives you the assurance that you're investing in a country that's safe and peaceful...and your returns on investment are safe," he said.

He added that the refinery project comes at a critical time when global geopolitical tensions continue to disrupt oil supply chains, emphasizing that the facility would not only serve Zambia but the wider region as demand for energy increases alongside the country’s push to raise copper production to three million metric tonnes.

Mr Halwaampa added that huge investments like these were a result of President Hakainde Hichilema's leadership in the pursuit for investment promotions and stable business policies for the country.
