Today, the UK joined the Government of Zambia, the UN and cooperating partners to mark the launch of Phase 3 of the UN Joint Programme on Social Protection.
Zambia has made significant progress in recent years. The national social protection system now reaches around 1.5 million households, helping some of the most vulnerable families to meet basic needs and manage shocks.
Phase 3 focuses on the next step: strengthening how the system works. This includes improving how information is managed, how services connect, and how support reaches people in a more joined-up and reliable way. It also ensures that gender equality and disability inclusion are fully integrated across the system. This comes at a critical time. Many households continue to face economic pressures, climate-related shocks, and food and nutrition challenges. A strong social protection system plays a vital role in helping families cope today while supporting resilience over the longer term.
The UK is proud to support this work alongside partners. Our approach is to back government-led systems that are inclusive, efficient, and sustainable over time. This reflects our wider focus on long-term development, strengthening public systems, and ensuring support reaches those most in need.

Today, Zambia’s Gender Division - GD officially launched the National GBV Call Centre and the 24/7 Stop GBV helpline (944) under the GEWEL II programme.
This is an important step forward. Gender-based violence remains widespread in Zambia, with nearly half of women experiencing violence in their lifetime. The new Call Centre will serve as a central hub to improve reporting, strengthen coordination across services, and ensure that women and girls can access timely support wherever they are in the country.
Strengthening systems like this is critical to delivering an effective, national response to gender-based violence—moving beyond fragmented services towards more coordinated, survivor-centred support.
The UK is proud to support Zambia’s efforts to protect women and girls and build safer, more inclusive communities.

We were delighted to see Barefeet host a powerful screening of BANSHEE – a two part dance theatre and documentary collaboration bringing together UK and Zambian artists in a bold exploration of identity, emotional release, and female empowerment.
Rooted in the voices of women from Garden Compound in Lusaka, BANSHEE was developed through an intensive two week workshop that created a safe, supportive space for women to share their stories, build confidence, and express themselves through the arts. What began as a group of strangers became a united community of 30 participants, culminating in a moving performance and film that speaks to strength, solidarity, and creativity.
BANSHEE was made possible through the British Council’s Festival Connect Fund, which supports meaningful collaboration between the UK and Sub Saharan Africa, encouraging artistic exchange, mobility, and innovation in festival making. Projects supported by the Fund don’t just entertain – they engage communities, address social issues, and contribute to a vibrant creative economy.
This project is a powerful example of the UK’s commitment to cultural exchange between the UK and Zambia, and to working with local partners to support inclusive, community led creativity that resonates far beyond the stage.
👏 Congratulations to Barefeet Theatre and everyone involved in bringing BANSHEE to life.

We were delighted to host the Caledonian Society Charity Presentation today!
Thanks to the incredible fundraising efforts of the Caledonian Society over the past year, donations were presented to a few outstanding local charities who are making a real difference in communities across Zambia. As with last year, Rebecca Terzeon, British High Commissioner and Jason Tran, Deputy Head of Mission marked the occasion with a small ceremony at the Residence, celebrating partnership, generosity, and shared purpose.
It was wonderful to recognise the impactful work of: Barefeet Theatre, Kalyula Children’s Cancer Foundation, APTERs & Sport in Action
This event is now becoming a valued annual tradition, and the UK is proud to support and host an initiative that brings people together to support vital community work.
Thank you to everyone involved – when we support one another, we can do amazing things.

Today we are marking World Malaria Day with partners across the world.
Malaria remains one of the leading causes of illness and death for children across Africa, but today, we have more tools than ever before to prevent it.
As the third largest donor to the Global Fund from inception and the largest contributor to Gavi, we are working with the Government of Zambia, communities and partners to expand access to proven malaria interventions, including vaccines, insecticide‑treated bed nets, diagnosis and treatment.
Zambia’s national rollout of the malaria vaccine, alongside other prevention measures, represents an important step towards protecting children and families, saving lives and moving closer to a malaria‑free future.
🇬🇧🤝🇿🇲 Together, we remain driven to end malaria — now we can, now we must.
