NEXT STATE OF ENVIRONMENT OUTLOOK REPORT
ZEMA has officially opened a two-day Stakeholder Consultation Workshop at Mika Lodge in Lusaka to spearhead the development of the country's next State of Environment (SoE) Outlook Report.
The workshop, running from May 27th to 28th, 2026, serves as a strategic platform for multistakeholder engagement aimed at aligning national priorities and establishing a clear roadmap for the report’s completion.
Under the Environmental Management Act No. 12 of 2011, ZEMA is mandated to publish a comprehensive environmental assessment every five years. This report is considered a vital "strategic instrument" for evidence-based planning, transparency, and accountability. While Zambia has produced five such reports since 1990, this upcoming edition will be the first published since the last update in 2017.
Working alongside diverse partners and experts, ZEMA is leading this process to produce a "comprehensive, credible, and policy-relevant" document designed to shape the future of Zambia’s environmental governance.
Opening the meeting, Acting Director General, Christopher Kanema, emphasized that the success of the SoE Outlook Report depends on "collective ownership" and sustained coordination across various institutions. Beyond fulfilling statutory requirements, the final report is intended to guide Zambia’s sustainable development agenda and reinforce the nation's commitment to international frameworks, such as the Sustainable Development Goals
