STREET VENDORS OVER POWER COUNCIL POLICE

What a sorry sight.

A government directive was given. “Move from the streets and move to the markets” The council police was deployed and they were met with furious resistance from defiant street vendors that chased the council police away.

To add insult to injury, some UPND Cadres openly told the street vendors to ignore Honorable Gary Nkombo’s directive and continue trading in the streets. To which the vendors erupted in jubilation.

This should not be allowed to continue. When the local authority guides, it is the duty of the citizenry to comply. This is what creates an atmosphere of lawlessness. Street Vendors threatening council police and telling them “Don’t come back here or else we shall beat you.” is a recipe for anarchy and absolute nonsense!!😡

The only solution is the Markets.

I urge The Ministry Of Local Government to launch a campaign called “Go Back To The Markets” and highlight the tremendous benefits of trading in the Markets.

STOP giving street vendors media coverage because eventually they will lead the narrative… instead, let the marketeers FROM INSIDE THE MARKETS lead the narrative.

📷 FOCUS ON THE MARKETEERS AND SHOW LIFE INSIDE THE MARKETS.

If we let this opportunity slip through our fingers we will never have a clean City. NEVER.

MEDIA STATEMENT
(For immediate release)

RELOCATION OF TRADERS FROM MUNYAULE MARKET TO THE MARKET ALONG SIMON MWEWA LANE

Lusaka - Tuesday 9th November 2021
Lusaka City Council (LCC) approved a plan to construct a modern market in partnership with Kaddoura Markets where Munyaule Market currently sits. All rumors insinuating that the piece of land has been sold should be ignored.
As part of the project approval process, Zambia Environmental Management Agency gave a condition to relocate traders occupying the market before construction of the modern market could commence. Therefore, the Council resolved to relocate the affected traders to the newly constructed Simon Mwewa Lane Market and allocate them stands so that there is no disruption of business.
LCC identified about five hundred (500) traders from Munyaule Market who were allocated space by the Council and are in possession of offer letters. The Local Authority would like to state that only traders that were legitimately offered trading space will be relocated to Simon Mwewa Lane Market.
Simon Mwewa Lane Market has two buildings of which one has three hundred and fourty two (342) shops and about one thousand (1000) stands which are ready for occupation. This will leave a surplus of about five hundred (500) stands after the traders from Munyaule Market are relocated to the new market.
The 342 shops and about 500 surplus stands will be allocated to applicants who meet the selection criteria.
In the spirit of transparency, LCC has been running an advertisement from 28th October 2021 inviting applications from traders who are residents of Lusaka to apply for shops and stands at the newly constructed Simon Mwewa Lane Market.

LUSAKA CITY COUNCIL HAS MADE A VERY BIG MISTAKE.

Yesterday, 5th November, 2021, Lusaka City Council announced that occupants of Munyaule Market will be relocated to the ground floor of Simon Mwewa Lane Market. My question is...If that is the case, why then has the council advertised the same stands that they have already pre-allocated and pre-selected to Munyaule Vendors?

Many Zambians from different walks of life have flooded The Civic Center and have paid the application fees ranging from K250 [ for shops ] to K100 [ for stands ]

So I ask again...If the current occupants of Munyaule Market have already been given the stands in the New Simon Mwewa Market...Why has Lusaka City Council advertised the same stands to the general public and have received application fees from the general public?

The Public will demand their application fees back since you have already pre-selected and declared that Munyaule Vendors will occupy the stands on the ground floor.

What a blunder.
