We hosted the inaugural Energy Sector Committee, driven by our members at the American Chamber of Commerce in Zambia. The committee serves as a dedicated platform for member companies operating in or engaging with the energy sector to collaborate, address industry challenges, and advocate for policies that enhance the sector's competitiveness and sustainability.
The meeting provided key insights on Zambia's energy sector including:
• Energy Reliability: Heavy reliance on hydropower poses climate variability risks. Such that Peak demand fluctuations often result in power shortages during dry seasons due to reduced water levels in reservoirs.
• Environmental Impact: Predominance of hydropower limits the diversification of energy sources, posing risks to environmental sustainability.
• Aging Infrastructure: Existing power infrastructure is outdated, leading to inefficiencies and increased risk of outages. Investment in modernization is crucial to improve reliability
• Accessibility: Grid requires expansion to increase energy access.
• Investment Needs: Significant investment is required to develop new power generation projects and modernize existing infrastructure. Securing funding remains a major challenge.
We will continue engaging our members in our key priority sectors to enhance our advocacy efforts.
