| World Sight Day 2026

We are looking back at the World Sight Day provincial commemoration held on 8 October in Mwinilunga District, North-Western Province.

The event brought together government leaders, eye health partners, health workers and Community Eye Health Champions to raise awareness about the importance of eye health. A march-past from the District Commissioner’s Office to Mwinilunga Boarding Secondary School marked the start of the celebrations.

Together, we continue to champion accessible eye care and remind everyone of the power of people in protecting sight.

A major milestone for biomedical specialists in the Copperbelt and North-Western provinces.

Last week, biomedical specialists took part in a specialised Hospital-Based Training (HBT) in biomedical equipment at Kitwe Teaching Eye Hospital, facilitated by Orbis Volunteer Faculty and Flying Eye Hospital Clinical Systems Manager, Ronald Gyi.

Supported by Orbis International – Zambia, the training is strengthening local capacity to maintain and repair ophthalmic equipment, supporting the Government’s efforts to improve access to quality eye care services.

Speaking on behalf of the Senior Medical Superintendent, Ophthalmologist Dr Silvia Moka highlighted that the high cost of ophthalmic equipment makes specialised maintenance skills essential. She noted that the training will help address existing challenges in equipment repair, build local expertise and ultimately contribute to better eye care services and patient outcomes.

The training continues this week at the University Teaching Hospitals Eye Hospital in Lusaka, bringing together biomedical specialists from Lusaka and Eastern provinces.

Through the partnership with the Ministry of Health, Orbis is investing in local expertise and sustainable health systems to help ensure that essential eye care equipment remains functional and patients receive quality care when they need it most.

Love Your Eyes – The Power of People
Orbis Zambia joined the Ministry of Health and eye health partners to commemorate World Sight Day 2026 under the theme “Love Your Eyes – The Power of People.” The commemoration, hosted at the Ministry of Health Headquarters, began with a vibrant march and brought together stakeholders united by a shared commitment to improving eye health in Zambia.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Health Prof. Roma Chilengi emphasised the importance of eye health to national development:
“A nation cannot fully develop if preventable or treatable loss of vision continues to limit the potential of its people.”

He further emphasised that eye health must not be treated as a privilege for a few, but as an essential public service that supports education, productivity, inclusion and quality of life. He reaffirmed Government’s commitment to strengthening eye health within the wider health system, improving referrals and public awareness, and ensuring eye health remains part of national health priorities.

Orbis Zambia Country Director Ms Lucia Mvula reaffirmed Orbis’ commitment to supporting Government priorities by strengthening the eye health workforce, expanding access to services, supporting community awareness and referral, and building sustainable eye health systems.

Love Your Eyes is a call to action for all of us. Together, we can bring eye care closer to communities and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to see, learn, work and live to their full potential.
