CHOOSING GOD’S WISDOM OVER WORLDLY WISDOM: 6 BUSINESS EXAMPLES
Every day, Christian business owners face decisions that test their values. The world offers one version of wisdom—built on power, image, and self-interest—but God calls us to a different path. Indeed, in 1 Corinthians, Paul draws a sharp contrast between God’s wisdom and the wisdom of the world, showing that God’s ways are far higher. In Chapter 3 he writes,
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
1 Corinthians 3:19-20
This theme runs throughout Scripture. What the world sees as foolish—things like humility, self-sacrifice, and integrity—God sees as wise. As Christian business owners, we constantly navigate situations where these two types of wisdom collide.
In this article, we’ll explore six business examples in which God’s wisdom differs from worldly wisdom. For each one, we’ll look at the different perspectives and share an example prayer prompt for those struggling with the challenge.
We hope this article helps you notice the contrast between God’s wisdom and the world’s wisdom as you encounter other challenges in your business. When you reach a fork in the road, which path will you choose? We pray this article encourages you to pause, seek God’s wisdom, and follow the path that honors Him.
Cutting Corners to Get Ahead?
You’re under pressure to hit a tight deadline, and your team is behind. You realize there’s a shortcut that could save time—but it would mean delivering something that’s just “good enough,” not your best work. No one would likely notice. But you would.
The World’s Wisdom
The world says success is all about results. If you can get it done faster and no one complains, what’s the harm? Efficiency and growth are often valued more than integrity. Cutting corners is a smart way to stay competitive and get ahead.
God’s Wisdom
Scripture tells us to work heartily as unto the Lord, not just for human approval (Colossians 3:23). God cares not just about outcomes but about how you get there. Honesty, diligence, and excellence matter to Him. Even when no one else is watching, He is.
Pray Over It
God, give me the strength to choose integrity over convenience. Help me honor You in how I work, not just in the results I produce.
Exaggerating Your Success?
You’re preparing for a big meeting with a potential investor. They ask about your company’s growth, and you’re tempted to inflate the numbers or downplay your struggles. You think, “If I can just get them on board, I’ll figure the rest out later.”
The World’s Wisdom
The world says success is about perception. Exaggerating results or stretching the truth is just part of the game. As long as it gets you the deal, it’s worth it. After all, everybody does it—and no one wants to back a business that looks uncertain.
God’s Wisdom
God calls us to speak the truth, even when it costs us. Proverbs 12:22 says, “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.” Honesty builds lasting trust and keeps your conscience clear.
Pray Over It
Lord, help me speak honestly and humbly, even when the truth feels risky. Remind me that integrity honors You and opens the right doors in Your time.
A Valid Reason to Charge More?
A wealthy client reaches out, and you know their budget is much higher than your standard rate. You’re tempted to raise your price—not because the work requires more, but because you know they won’t blink at the cost.
The World’s Wisdom
The world says to charge as much as the market will bear. If someone has more money, it’s fair game to profit from it. Maximizing profit is often seen as the ultimate goal.
God’s Wisdom
God calls us to deal honestly and fairly with others. Proverbs 11:1 says, “A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.” Your pricing should reflect the value of your work—not someone’s wallet.
Pray Over It
Lord, help me to operate with fairness to every client. Keep my heart focused on serving others, not just maximizing profits.
Getting Even or Letting Go?
An employee who’s normally dependable made a costly mistake. They’ve admitted the error, apologized sincerely, and taken responsibility. You’re frustrated—understandably so—and now faced with the choice to get even or offer forgiveness.
The World’s Wisdom
The world says you should make them pay for their mistake. Call them out publicly, shame them, or make them feel the weight of their actions. That way, they’ll think twice before messing up again. It’s about control and making sure people know who’s in charge.
God’s Wisdom
God calls us to forgive, especially when someone sincerely repents. Ephesians 4:32 says, “And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” If the person is genuinely sorry, God’s way is to offer forgiveness and restore the relationship, not punish them.
Pray Over It
God, help me release frustration and extend the same grace You’ve shown me. Teach me to lead with mercy, even when it’s hard, and to build others up instead of retaliating.
Taking Credit or Sharing It?
You just secured a big win for your company—like a new client, a major deal, or a successful product launch. Everyone is congratulating you. But deep down, you know a team member played a key role behind the scenes. Their effort was quiet but essential. Now you’re deciding: let the spotlight stay on you or give them the recognition they deserve?
The World’s Wisdom
The world says to protect your image and build your personal brand. You’re the leader, and the win happened on your watch—so it’s yours to own. Why share credit when it could dilute your authority or lessen your value in others’ eyes?
God’s Wisdom
Scripture teaches that humility matters more than personal glory. Philippians 2:3 says, “Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” God’s wisdom says to lift others up, celebrate your team's contributions, and give honor where it’s due. That builds trust and reflects Christlike leadership.
Pray Over It
Lord, guard my heart from pride and help me to lead with humility. Give me the courage to recognize others publicly and to reflect Your character in how I lead and celebrate wins.
The Never-Ending Hustle
Your schedule is packed, your to-do list never ends, and you haven’t rested in weeks. Business is going well—but your soul feels tired. The pressure to stay ahead keeps you going, but you’re unsure how long you can keep this pace. You wonder if slowing down will set you back.
The World’s Wisdom
The world glorifies hustle culture. Success comes to those who never stop moving, grinding, and pushing harder. Rest is for the weak—or for later when you’ve finally “made it.” The more you sacrifice now, the more you’ll gain.
God’s Wisdom
In Scripture, God models rest Himself when, in the days of creation, He rests on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2). God designed rest into the rhythm of creation to remind us that we are not limitless. Taking time to pause and recharge isn’t lazy. It shows that you trust God to sustain your business, even when you step away from the grind to recharge.
Pray Over It
God, remind me that my worth isn’t tied to my productivity. Help me trust You enough to rest and honor the limits You’ve lovingly set.
Choosing God’s Wisdom
Every day in business, you face decisions that reveal what kind of leader you are becoming. The world will offer shortcuts, encourage self-promotion, and praise profit at all costs. But God calls you to walk with integrity, humility, and trust.
Our hope is that when you face a tough decision, you’ll pause to consider both perspectives: What would the world tell me to do—and what would God say? This simple reflection can help you choose the path that honors Him. His ways are always higher and will lead you to lasting peace, purpose, and joy!
