On December 11, 2018, Afya Mzuri, the MCA-Zambia Innovation Grant recipient officially handed over a block of toilets and showers at Mtendere and Kazimai Market. The Ceremony was officiated by Minister of Education and Munali Constituency MP Hon. Nkandu Luo and MCC Deputy Resident Country Director Ms. Gigi Goodhart.

The handover ceremony was held in Mtendere Market and was attended by marketeers, Mtendere Ward 30 Councillor Watson Mtonga, and Afya Mzuri Executive Director Mr. Mutale Bowa among others.

Afya Mzuri is a Zambian non-governmental health organization implementing behaviour change, community empowerment and knowledge management programs. Its activities contribute to the national health response through empowering people and communities to adopt healthy behaviours.

Afya Mzuri has implemented a sanitation project aimed at promoting sustainable menstrual hygiene management and sanitation for market women in Mtendere and Kazimai Markets, with support from Millennium Challenge-Zambia (MCA-Z) through a grant. Afya Mzuri has constructed two sanitation facilities in the two markets.

The holding facilities contain showers, toilets and change rooms to support the management of menstrual hygiene for market women. Each facility is fitted with water reserve tank to ensure continued water supply to the facilities. The completed facilities have since handed over to Afya Mzuri and currently in use by the Mtendere communities.

MCC Celebrates the Closeout of the Five-Year, $355 Million Zambia Compact

Lusaka November 2, 2018 - Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary Jeanne Hauch visited Lusaka this week to recognise the accomplishments of the MCC-Zambia Compact.

While in lusaka, Ms. Hauch met Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu, U.S Ambassador Daniel L. Foote, Zambian Minister of Finance Margaret Mwanakatwe, and other Zambian government senior officials, as well as the dedicated Millennium Challenge Account - Zambia staff. The MCC Vice President also visited project sites and met with beneficiaries of the MCC-Zambia Compact.

“It has been an honour to be here this week to celebrate the successes of the MCC-Zambia Compact,” MCC Vice President Jeanne Hauch said at the conclusion of her trip. “This Compact is MCC’s largest urban water investment to date. Not only will the Compact investments increase access of ordinary Zambians to water, they will also decrease water related diseases and reduce destructive flooding.”

President Edgar Lungu who officiated at the Smart Safe Water Scheme Scaling Upgrade
Project for Jack Compound handover ceremony commended the United States government for the support.

President Lungu said the Smart Safe Water Scheme demonstrated the great friendship between Zambia and United States of America.

He added that the US$ 355 million grant from the American people is one of the many examples of great support received from the American government.

Meanwhile President Lungu praised the American government for the infrastructure works on the Bombay and Mazyopa drainages and the innovative intervention in solid waste management.

He said the drainage system will assist in reducing flooding, especially in the central business district of Lusaka.

Speaking at the same event US Ambassador to Zambia Daniel L. Foote said he was proud that the United States has played a fundamental role in promoting the supply of clean water and access to improved sanitation here in Zambia.

“Too many people in Zambia and around the world do not have access to these basic services, yet they are critical to the health and prosperity of our communities,” he noted.

The MCC-Zambia Compact was designed to create a more productive and efficient water sector in Zambia to improve Zambia’s health, catalyse economic growth, and reduce poverty.

MCC’s compact has created opportunities and improved the lives of Zambians living in Lusaka. The lasting impact of the MCC-Zambia Compact is reduced flooding because of improved drainage infrastructure, increased access to water supply and sanitation due to improved water and sanitation infrastructure and improved provision of services from Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company and Lusaka City council.

MCC’s investment in Zambia’s water sector will benefit approximately 1.2 million people over the next 20 years.
