LABOUR DAY MESSAGE - 1ST MAY 2026

Theme: “Securing Zambia’s Future of Work: Protecting Jobs, Skills and Pensions for Decent Work for All.”

Today, as Zambia joins the rest of the world in commemorating Labour Day, we honour the resilience, dedication, and invaluable contributions of workers across all sectors who continue to drive our nation forward. This day stands as a powerful reminder that the strength of our country lies in the dignity of labour and the collective effort of its people.

This year’s theme calls for a renewed commitment to safeguarding the future of work in Zambia. In an era defined by rapid technological change, economic uncertainty, and evolving labour markets, it is imperative that we prioritize the protection of jobs, invest in relevant and adaptive skills, and ensure sustainable pension systems that guarantee security and dignity for all workers, both present and future.

As we reflect, we must acknowledge the critical role of young people in shaping Zambia’s workforce. The youth represent not only the largest demographic but also the most dynamic force capable of driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and national development.

However, many young people continue to face significant challenges, including unemployment, underemployment, and limited access to skills development opportunities.

Securing Zambia’s future of work therefore demands deliberate action to empower young people with quality education, vocational training, digital skills, and meaningful employment pathways. It requires inclusive policies that create opportunities for youth participation in decision-making processes and ensure that no young person is left behind in the transformation of our labour systems.

This is a call to action for government, private sector, civil society, and all stakeholders to work collaboratively in building a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable workforce. Let us invest in our people, protect workers’ rights, promote decent work, and create an enabling environment where innovation and enterprise can thrive.

To the young people of Zambia: your voice matters, your potential is immense, and your role in shaping the future of work is indispensable. Rise to the occasion, equip yourselves with knowledge and skills, and actively engage in shaping policies and systems that affect your future.

Together, let us build a Zambia where every worker is valued, every job is protected, and every citizen has the opportunity to work with dignity and security.

Happy Labour Day.

Today, I join the nation in honouring Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, the founding President of Zambia, whose legacy of unity, peace, humility, and servant leadership continues to inspire generations.

As a Youth Advocate, Kenneth Kaunda Day reminds me that true leadership is not about power or recognition, but about selfless service, integrity, and commitment to national development. His vision of “One Zambia, One Nation” remains a powerful call for us young people to rise above division, embrace diversity, and work together towards a peaceful and progressive Zambia.

Dr. Kaunda’s life teaches us that young people have a responsibility to become agents of positive change through active citizenship, patriotism, discipline, and community service. In a time where our nation needs visionary and responsible leadership, his legacy challenges us to lead with compassion, courage, and purpose.

As we commemorate this important day, I reaffirm my commitment to advocating for youth empowerment, peacebuilding, good governance, and sustainable development for the betterment of our communities and the nation at large.

May we continue to uphold the values of unity, love, humility, and service that Dr. Kaunda dedicated his life to promoting.

Asante!

You Can’t Stop a Vision Whose Time Has Come

27th March 2026 will forever remain a historic milestone, a day that will be etched in our hearts for generations to come.

Coming shortly after the National Commemoration of Youth Day under the theme “Arise and Soar,” a thought provoking theme, a period of deep reflection for young people to critically assess their role in shaping the future and to strategically position themselves in alignment with opportunities for growth, leadership, and impact.

For some of us, this period was filled with both sorrowful and joyful tears, a powerful reminder that history is not only remembered, but created. Once again, a defining chapter has been written, one that cannot easily be erased.

This is the story of a youth-led organisation from the Northern Circuit, specifically Luapula Province, a region often unfairly underestimated, sometimes dismissed as underdeveloped or “just a village.” While such perceptions may exist, they do not tell the full story.

What remains undeniable is the immense, untapped potential that lies within the youth of Luapula. A generation rich in natural talent, innovation, and resilience, young people who, when given the right opportunities, support, and empowerment, are fully capable of driving sustainable development within their communities and beyond.

This moment stands as a testament: greatness is not determined by geography, but by vision, determination, and collective action.

The journey has not been easy. It has been marked by challenges, criticism, name-calling, bitterness, jealousy, and envy. Yet, through it all, this small group of determined and visionary young people has remained steadfast, transforming adversity into strength and becoming a beacon of hope and light.

This reality calls for reflection. Why do some give up while others persist? The answer lies in purpose, discipline, and the courage to keep going even when the odds are stacked against you. It is a lesson not only for individuals, but for the broader youth movement.

A truth emerges, one that calls for reflection, self-introspection, and renewed resolve.

Despite limited resources, we have, within our means, positioned ourselves as a youth powerhouse, first within the Province, and now across the wider youth landscape. What once seemed unlikely has now become REALITY.

Even when others doubted us and never believed in our potential, we chose to believe in OURSELVES, firmly, consistently, and without compromise.

Today, we have brought it HOME. But honestly, how many have shown genuine love and support to these selfless, dedicated and self motivated young leaders who are positioning the province, raising its bar, speaking of its potential at a National Plartform and emerges as outstanding in the country?

This is not a small achievement, it is one that comes once in a year, and its significance cannot be overlooked. But honestly, your guess is as good as mine.

Yes, the youth whom we proudly represent have truly shown that love. But for others, this moment serves as a reminder, that ‘You cannot stop a vision whose time has come, especially one that is destined to endure.

Who would have imagined that a Youth-led organisation from Luapula would be recognized as “Youth-led Organisation of the Year” especially on such a Huge Platform, the first of its kind?

This recognition is not just an award, it is a symbol of dedication, commitment, excellence, and, most importantly, meaningful and positive impact.

This award carries the hopes, aspirations, and voices of thousands of young people across the country. And today, we proudly confirm and affirm that we have brought it HOME.

Home, to the very place that gave birth to our organisation.

This achievement is not ours alone. It is a clear affirmation of the immense potential that exists within our region. We stand not just as an organisation, but as a vessel, demonstrating to the nation and the world that Luapula has that potential.

We are proud to have laid a firm, strong and enduring foundation, even amidst limited support. More importantly, we have opened doors for greater excellence, for those who will come after us.

While this moment is deeply emotional, it also calls for renewed commitment: to genuinely and honeslty support, uplift, and strategically position young people where their potential can be recognized, nurtured, and celebrated.

It is time to build on what has been established. It is time to strengthen collaboration, foster genuine support systems, and intentionally create platforms where youth potential can be recognized, nurtured, and celebrated.

We are extremely honored and privileged to be among the torchbearers of this foundation, and we remain hopeful that more youth-led organisations will be supported to rise and achieve their full potential.

Because indeed,

You can’t stop an vision whose time has come.

This is just the beginning of the greater things we are yet to see.

Inspiring Informed Choices: Career Expo for School Leavers

Today, we once again successfully hosted a Career Expo in partnership with the University College of Ndola at Council Rest House in Senama, where we convened school leavers to explore diverse career pathways and gain a deeper appreciation of the wide range of professional opportunities available to them.

This initiative is a continuation of our commitment, building on the success of the first-ever “The Bridge – School Leavers Seminar” held last month, which was aimed at equipping young people with the knowledge needed to make informed career decisions.

We are immensely proud to have created a platform where school leavers can interact directly with professionals and academic institutions even before making critical decisions about their future.

The attendance was truly electrifying, reflecting the strong eagerness and determination of young people to learn, grow, and make informed choices about their career paths.

We are honored to be part of their journey.

As we move forward, we remain confident that empowering youth with knowledge is a powerful investment in the future. More impactful initiatives are on the way.

ZNBC Radio 2’s Breakfast Show Interview

This morning, we had the distinct privilege, as an organisation, to feature on ZNBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show through our Executive Director, Mr. Kaira Wongani, in a live discussion hosted by Kumbutso Banda. The conversation centered on Government’s recent approval and pronouncement of the 24-hour economy, an important policy direction that has already begun to spark meaningful dialogue across the country.

As a youth-led organisation, our engagement focused on unpacking what this development truly means for young people, particularly in the area of job creation, entrepreneurship, and economic inclusion. We began by applauding and commending Government for this bold and progressive initiative. We believe it reflects a deliberate step toward expanding economic participation and unlocking new opportunities for growth.

From our perspective, the introduction of a 24-hour economy has the potential to significantly reshape the employment landscape for young people. By allowing businesses to operate beyond traditional hours, it creates space for shift-based employment across key sectors such as retail, transport, hospitality, and security.

This directly translates into increased job opportunities, especially for young people who often face barriers to entry in the labour market. Furthermore, it offers flexibility for youths who may be pursuing education or other daytime commitments, enabling them to participate meaningfully in the economy without compromising their personal development.

Beyond employment, we emphasized that this initiative opens up a wide range of practical and accessible entrepreneurial opportunities. Young people can venture into businesses that respond to the needs of a 24-hour environment, such as late-night food services, small retail outlets, transport solutions, mobile money services, and essential services like phone charging and airtime provision. These are not abstract opportunities, but real, everyday solutions to challenges that communities face when services are unavailable during late hours.

We also encouraged young people to be intentional and proactive in positioning themselves to benefit from this shift. This includes identifying gaps within their communities, building essential entrepreneurial and financial management skills, and leveraging collaboration through youth groups and cooperatives. Consistency, reliability, and innovation will be key in building trust and sustaining businesses in a round-the-clock economy.

Importantly, we brought attention to the practical realities in provinces such as Luapula Province, where the 24-hour economy could have a transformative grassroots impact. With extended market hours and increased movement of people, especially with buses operating at all times, there will be a continuous flow of economic activity.

This presents clear opportunities for young entrepreneurs to establish small but impactful businesses, such as food stands near bus stations, mobile money and airtime services, phone charging hubs, and small-scale goods transportation during off-peak hours. These ventures, though simple, have the potential to create sustainable livelihoods and stimulate local economies.

While we fully welcome and support this progressive initiative, we also acknowledge and share the concerns raised by members of the public. For the 24-hour economy to be effective and inclusive, there must be deliberate investment in enabling infrastructure and services.

Key among these is the strengthening of security systems to ensure the safety of both citizens and businesses operating at all hours. Additionally, street lighting must be fully functional and consistently maintained, public infrastructure should be rehabilitated, and road networks improved to facilitate the smooth movement of people and goods.

In conclusion, we remain optimistic that, with the right implementation measures and stakeholder collaboration, the 24-hour economy can become a powerful tool for youth empowerment, job creation, and inclusive national development.

As an organisation, we are committed to continuing to amplify the voice of young people and to supporting initiatives that create real, lasting opportunities for their growth and participation in Zambia’s development agenda.
