As part of activities set to mark World Food Safety Day this weekend, Mongu Municipal Council, through its Department of Public Health, today conducted inspections on various food premises within the Central Business District (CBD).

The exercise targeted markets, butcheries, and restaurants with the aim of enhancing compliance on public health regulations and ensuring that food sold to the public is prepared, stored, and handled under hygienic conditions.

A team of Public Health Inspectors led by Senior Public Health Education Officer Mr. Sekeli Lyayo engaged food handlers and traders on the importance of maintaining high standards of hygiene throughout the food supply chain to prevent contamination and illnesses.

Mr. Lyayo further explained the risks associated with selling food on the streets instead of designated trading areas approved by the council, stating that such practices expose consumers to contamination and increase the risk of food-borne diseases.

The team urged members of the public to desist from purchasing food from traders operating on the streets and other undesignated places, emphasizing the need to prioritize food safety when making purchases.

Traders were also warned against buying food products without verifying their source and ensuring that they are safe for human consumption.

Officers further discouraged the sale and use of unregulated products in markets simply because they are cheaper.

Food safety is a shared responsibility involving food handlers, traders, and consumers. All are encouraged to adhere to food safety regulations in order to prevent food-borne diseases and protect public health.

Mongu Municipal Council will continue conducting routine inspections and sensitization programmes aimed at promoting food safety and ensuring that residents have access to safe food.

World Food Safety Day is commemorated annually on 7 June and will this year be held under the theme: โ€œFood Safety: From Burden to Solutions, Safe Food Everywhere.โ€
