Mufulira Heads of government Departments Sweep Central Business District
The District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) of Mufulira has resolved to clean the district twice a month to ensure that the district is free from outbreaks of diseases.
The District Commissioner Mr. Chanda Kabwe led the heads of government officials and stake holders of Mufulira district to clean the town centre.
Mr. Kabwe said the DDCC members resolved to clean the town twice a month to demonstrate government’s commitment to keeping the district clean and support the ‘keep Zambia Clean’ campaign initiated by the Ministry of Local Government and Housing as it was one way good health of the people would be maintained.
The District Commissioner explained that the cleaning exercise was meant to sensitise the public with the habit of throwing litre anyhow to stop the behaviour as it was making the town dirty.
He said the exercise was also meant to teach the people the importance of living in a clean environment as such diseases like diarrhea, typhoid and dysentery would be prevented.
“I want a message to get to traders that they must live in a clean environment and also beautify our district,” said Mr. Kabwe.
He said the traders handled food and if the food stuff was not kept in a clean environment, outbreaks of diseases would manifest in the district.
Mr. Kabwe also mentioned that the DDCC would empower street vendors by buying them cleaning equipments to enable them clean their premises.
And Eunice Chitwala a street vendor expressed happiness at the stance taken by the heads of government departments to sweep the street saying that the exercise was very encouraging to the street vendors as it had set an example and she called upon her fellow street vendors to ensure that they cleaned areas where they traded from adding that they were the generators of the waste and should not expect the local authority to clean up their trading premises.

Mufulira Municipal Council has constructed two bridges in Mulungushi Ward at a cost of K15, 000.00 using Ward Development Fund. This has enabled vehicles reach part of the ward which was inaccessible in the recent past due to vandalism caused to culverts by some people.
Mulungushi Ward Councillor who is also Mufulira Mayor, Thomson Ngulube told Mufulira news that the act of vandalism was of big concern in the ward as it had made innocent people suffer, a situation he described as very unfortunate. Councillor Ngulube has however urged the residents in the area to refrain from the vice and take good care of the two new bridges that had been constructed at a great cost, the fund that should have been used to spearhead new projects.
The Mayor said the council is yet to finish constructing the third bridge and start clearing the drainages in the ward before the onset of rains.
He however bemoaned the challenges the council was facing in combating waste in his ward and the rest of the district adding that the failure by residents to subscribe to waste management companies to collect their waste had perpetrated the situation and the lack of sufficient funds by the council to adequately manage waste had exacerbated the problem; but he was nevertheless hopeful that the council through the Health, Environment and social services Committee would come up with the lasting solution to the problem. “We need to sit with Environment Committee and find the lasting solution towards waste management and it is a big nuisance to the district,” the Mayor said.
And one of Mulungushi ward residents, Ruth Nkata thanked the council for constructing the bridge but appealed to the local authority to put road humps in the area and clear the drainages before the onset of rains.
Ms Nkata said the erratic water supply in the area should also be addressed if water borne diseases were to be prevented.
