CHILD HEALTH WEEK LAUNCHED
Mufulira District today officially launched the Child Health Week scheduled to run from 26th to 31st October, 2026, during a ceremony held at Taung-Up.
The launch brought together health officials from across the district, District Administration, Mufulira Municipal Council leadership, and community stakeholders.
Speaking at the event, District Health Director, Dr. Abel Hamoonga, said Child Health Week is an important opportunity to bring essential, life-saving services closer to communities.
"Child Health Week provides an opportunity to reach children who may have missed key health interventions and to strengthen collaboration between health facilities and communities," Dr. Hamoonga said.
Speaking at the same event, Mufulira Municipal Council Town Clerk, Mrs. Chisanga Kasonde Musongole, said during this round of Child Health Week, children will receive a comprehensive package of services.
"During this round of Child Health Week, we will be providing growth monitoring, Vitamin A supplementation, deworming, routine immunization, management of sick children and many other health services that are beneficial to the child," Mrs. Musongole said.
She emphasized that a child who misses immunization or other essential health services remains vulnerable to preventable illnesses and called upon parents, caregivers, community leaders and all stakeholders to play an active role.
"Let us close the gaps and ensure that lives are protected," she said.
Guest of Honour, Mufulira District Commissioner, Mr. Evaristo Chilumba represented by Kansuswa Primary School Head Teacher Mrs. Catherine Changwe Chalwe said the theme "Closing the last mile for every child" is a reminder that every child deserves access to essential health services regardless of where they live.
"Child Health Week provides an opportunity to reach children with Vitamin A supplementation, deworming, growth monitoring and other essential health interventions. These services protect our children from preventable diseases and promote their healthy growth and development," Mrs. Chalwe said.
She further stated that protecting children's health is not the responsibility of health workers alone but requires the active participation of every stakeholder and every member of the community.
"Let us make a commitment that by the end of this week, we will have reached as many eligible children as possible and identified those who still need services for follow-up. We must not measure our success only by the number of activities conducted, but by the number of children reached," she added.
The District Commissioner officially launched the Child Health Week and urged all parents and guardians in Mufulira to take their children under five years to the nearest health facility or outreach post from 26th to 31st October, 2026.
Mufulira Municipal Council urges all parents, caregivers, and community leaders to ensure that no child is left behind.
